Last night in the hallway I heard about Spock, a new personal search service that will get turned on next week at the Web 2.0 Expo. I heard that TechCrunch will have a preview of the service soon, maybe even later today.
But, the person telling me this was alarmed at how much easier it was to troll through someone’s personal history than it is on Google or other search engines.
I can’t wait to see it, but imagine it will be the talk of the town. Spock isn’t alone, either. Dave Sifry, CEO of Technorati, told me last night that he knows of a handful of companies that are going after the personal search space.
I’ll report more on some of the things it lets you find after I see it.

note: there is an early Spock preview on TechCrunch here. more will be revealed next week when the company does their LaunchPad debut at Web 2.0 Expo on Monday.
just to be clear: the information on Spock is initially gathered from publicly accessible info about people already available on the web, in the same way that Google & Yahoo collect info on web pages publicly available on the web.
however, people data found on Spock will be much more clearly & accurately presented than what is currently found on Google or Yahoo or other generic search engines today.

Hi Robert, this subject is very near and dear to our heart at http://www.fatdoor.com. In fact we have a lot of thinking happening on that front and we have industry leaders working with us to make sure we build a community that has right privacy policies.
But my biggest concern is not so much about the search engines that aggregate and surface the data but the social networks that create the data in first place.
A well thought-out privacy strategy is essential for any social networking company.
