One blogger in the whole Kathy Sierra thing that I found to do a great job is Jim Turner. He did lots of original reporting over the past two weeks, go back and look at his blog over the past couple of weeks (was one of a handful of bloggers who contacted everyone involved). He didn’t get emotional, even though lots of his friends were involved. He presented the facts as completely and objectively as he could.
If all bloggers did jobs like this then we wouldn’t need calls for blogger codes of conduct.
I count myself in that rebuke. I haven’t been to this level of blogging for a while.
Thanks Jim for providing a good bar for us all to aspire to.
Oh, and Maryam wraps this whole thing up with “nobody looks good in public fights.”
HAH! I read it as …Maryam wraps this whole thing up with “Robert don’t look good in tights!” 🙂

Jim’s blog is always great. it’s nice to see a cool head in all this Code of Conduct hoopla.
And, BTW, O’Reilly’s Code of Conduct is LAME. Even lamer than my Internet Blacklist idea, which is saying something. 🙂

With fame, comes celebrity.
With celebrity you always seem to get people who project the worst aspects of themselves onto you.
Frankly, I wouldn’t want to live without a high degree of anonymity because the conflicts spill over into private matters… marriage, parenting, business discussions, etc. But that’s me.
For those the decide to live very openly (consider Adam Curry as a prime example of this option) you MUST have some controls in place and a very thick skin.
“Public fights” just add unneccesary voices into a potential argument that has already escalated out of control. Choose your fights with great discretion.
Every fight leaves a scar of some sort. Get enough scars and you loose feeling where there once was sensitivity.
Blog Naked but only if you can stand the candid (pot)shots. All soldiers get a little R&R.

I am hurt that I was not given tights for my Sherwood Forrest version of Robin Hood Robert 🙂 I do agree with your assessment of Jim’s approach though.
Every blogger has a personality though and perhaps Jim is one of those guys who could kill flipper for a tuna sandwich, it would be easier to be objective with that type or temperament.
A code is very necessary in any civil endeavor, but like the man says O’Reilly is off base. There are much larger issues than him being curtailed by the feds (which is all he cares about).
Just some thoughts Robert.

There is nothing wrong with having empathy for a sympathetic victim and expressing human outrage over gratuitous, dehumanized evil.
What percentage of society will act out their violent fantasies – and are now giving warnings to all they come in contact with, that they have much more potential than most to realize their vile imaginations?
We are outraged because surviving in this difficult world is important to us – and we never know if eventually anyone of us will come in contact with the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I am a big fan of Kathy and Hugh and your name keeps popping everywhere on their site, so I decided to browse your blog.
I like the title and content of this specific post, especially when I realize that you are a blogger veteran…
To be added to the 7 blogging virtues ?
In any case, nice to “meet” you

Thanks for the link and the kind words Robert. Perhaps we should disclose that you were not paid for this review 😉

Phil, thanks for making me smile. I need to add a quote section on my sidebar for just this quote.
For the record, I pay my lawyer to do all dolphin killing. I do love me some sushi grade tuna.
