Back at Microsoft TechFest

It’s weird being back at Microsoft just a few yards from the building I last worked at. I’m sitting in the front row with Jeff Clavier, Scott Beale, and a bunch of others (there are several hundred journalists here for Microsoft Research’s 15-year-blowout TechFest). You can listen in on MS Research’s TechFest site. Rick Rashid, head of Research, is on stage. So far not much interesting, will let you know what I see.

UPDATE: I’m Twittering it. Curtis Wong (who is one of the smartest people I met in my Microsoft travels) just showed off Sky Server, which lets you walk around the sky, much like you can with Google Earth. This is inspiring, it’s like having the Hubble Telescope to walk around right on your desktop.

It also demonstrates how much we lost when Jim Gray sailed his boat out of the Golden Gate never to be heard from again.

  1. Oh dear god, I am about 12:00 minutes into Rick Rashid’s keynote and I think I am going to fall asleep. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sifting through the nonsense to find us the rare gems. BTW, I subscribed to your shared items the other day. I am having trouble keeping up. Slow down for god’s sake. =)

  5. Speaking of sifting through the nonsense, we’ve already started posting at Channel 9 (http://channel9.msdn.com).

    I don’t know how many interviews I recorded, but I got enough material to keep people happy all week.

    After that, for those of you who are interested in MSR, I’m going to follow up with a bunch of MSR people on campus (the interviewing conditions on press day were less than ideal – I want to interview these teams in the quiet of their work environments).

    All very cool stuff.

  9. Robert, I am in a training for the whole week. I hope you visited our booth. It is the theory booth, with physics, geometry, algorithms, and ecommerce demos/posters and an auction game form.

    Did you bid in the auction game? I know you can’t win the prizes but just for fun.

  11. Hi Robert, Thanks for the good words about the World Wide Telescope. It started with Jim’s vision for SkyServer as the first step but we were always thinking about and working towards the big visionwhich we showed a tiny bit of today.

    We all miss him terribly. He is genuinely the smartest person I know and certainly the kindest and most generous soul I have had the pleasure to meet and work with at MS.
