Edgeio just shipped its new Marketplaces board technology into beta so you can try it out. What is it? It lets you add classified ads and other board information to your blog. I sat down with Marketplaces’ product manager John Dowd to get the details. The press release and other details are up on Edgeio’s blog. TechCrunch’s job board functionality was built with this.

Certainly looks interesting… But why not just provide a widget to bloggers? Sellers would use the Edgeio site to create their listing, and then those listings would be distributed to the users with widgets. The listings would be determined by the content of the site/blog (either via tags, or setup by the blogger).
If the seller wants to create a listing specifically for the blog/site they are on, the would simply click a link within the widget and fire away…

If it’s anything like their previous projects, then I’m already running for cover. Their original website had bugs with both Firefox and IE7. When I filed a bug they apologized and promised me a gift for helping them with the bug. I never got a gift. I sent them an email months later and they apologized and said they would send me gift again. Months later, no gift and I asked again about the gift, but they no longer respond to my emails. Good company!

Hi Robert
Great that you covered this. Notwithstanding Randy’s comment (Randy I actually signed the Amazon voucher we sent you, email me keith at edgeio dot com and I will chase it) we are very happy with marketplaces. Unlike our launch site in March 2006, we now have many engineers and QA people. Our code is still produced with a view to rapid development but I think you will find it very stable.
The idea of marketplaces and classified boards is to create a revenue ecosystem for web sites that can work alongside advertising. There is no good reason why newspapers and magazines should earn revenue from both ads and listings but web sites cannot.
Try it out – it’s free to try. I think it might impress you.
And there is more coming from John Dowd. Wait for the next marketplaces product in April/Mat timeframe.

Do we really need a proliferation of job boards with minimal listings? I’m sorry but I just don’t get it.
