Ahead of my time, Real Estate blogging wise

David Krug today recommends doing a Real Estate blog, if you wanna make money. Heh, I got our real estate guy, Stan Mackey, to blog (he helped Chris and Ponzi Pirillo find their house recently, we vote him best real estate guy in Seattle) but he hasn’t blogged since January. Hi Stan!  See, I was ahead of my time when I told him early last year to start a blog.

But, seriously, if you’re looking to make money with a blog, why don’t you just look for an audience that has a high affinity for transactions (which is why Gizmodo and Engadget made such great businesses, cause their readers buy lots of gadgets), along with a fairly good audience size (beer drinkers anyone?) with low competition (plumbers!).

If you’re a plumber who is a beer freak and who has more gadgets than Vic Gundotra, give me a call. Heheh.

  1. Real estate blogging in the US is a little more mature than many may realize with the international community catching up quickly.

One can quickly come up to speed with the goings on in the real estate blogging community. There already is an A List of sorts growing among Real Estate bloggers (http://realestatetomato.typepad.com/, http://blog.sellsiusrealestate.com/, among others), a real estate focused Digg like site (http://realestatevoices.com), a real estate blog carnival (http://www.carnivalofrealestate.com/), and a community blogging group of well over 10,000 agents that blog (http://activerain.com). These are just the sites that come to mind immediately….

US real estate blogging is beginning to become quite mature. There is growing recognition of an A list (http://realestatetomato.typepad.com and http://blog.sellsiusrealestate.com/ come to mind immediately among others), a Digg like site dedicated to real estate (http://realestatevoices.com), a weekly real estate blog carnival (http://carnivalofrealestate.com), and a 10,000 agent member strong content mall for real estate bloggers. (http://activerain.com).

One can start with these resources to come up to speed quickly on what is going on in the real estate blogging community.

  5. Robert-

We’ve been doing all we can to educate real estate agents on how to properly embrace the business blog as a marketing tool… and when I say “all we can,” I mean it. There’s no holding back the flood gates… I can only hope we have enough life preservers to go around.

  7. I believe we’ll see more niche real estate blogging. Since real estate is so local, makes sense that real estate blogging will be as well. As the platform and activity explode in the near future, I can see real estate professionals going after the approuch of assembling small/local networks around their blog. We’re trying to apply concept currently…

  8. While the real estate industry has been slower to adopt blogging and technology in general than most, I see it starting to pick up steam. Over at ActiveRain we have a community blogging platform that’s picked up about 17k members (ok only about 3k have actively blogged) in the last 8 months.

Blogging has shown itself to be a particularly effective marketing tool in real estate. There are a large number of (very successful) agents, who’s blog is their primary business generator. I think the reason is it’s effective is that consumers have been bombarded with advertising, spam and lead aggregation companies. A blog tends to help the agent generate trust in a low pressure environment while the consumer can maintain their anonymity.

  11. Robert, Thank you for the plug and the playful ribbing. January was a strange month for me. With catching up from the December weather issues and then went ill for 2 weeks, I totally went brain dead for writing the blog. I am looking forward to getting started again from my hiatus. Great to hear you and Maryam will be in town in the next day or so, and look forward to seeing you at Chris and Ponzi’s new place. I think you’ll like it. Thanks for kicking me in the pants to get back to the blog!!

  13. Incidentally, I just started a real estate blog for b5media, Propertycrossroads.com It’s not a real estate sales blog, so my topics are not limited to a specific area. I aim to make it as a one-stop information resource for real estate in general. It discusses everything that has to do with real estate from trends, news, views, buying and selling tools, latest developments in the US and the rest of the world. It is fairly new, but I’m adding more articles each week. I’m also open to suggestions for future topics.

  15. Blogging is quickly becoming nearly a necessity to remain competitive in real estate. Those that aren’t, are falling way behind.
