I was just over at Don Park’s blog and saw that Kevin Marks, a familiar face to those of us in the tech blogging world, has left Technorati and gone to Google to work on blog search.
Of course, this offers another opportunity to study blog search. Here’s Technorati’s search of who is linking to Kevin’s blog post about the event. Here’s Google’s blog search of same.
I wish Technorati well. I like Dave Sifry and Tantek Celik a lot. But, they have a huge technological (and marketing) challenge ahead of them. If the big company’s stuff is better than the small company’s stuff, then why do we need the small company’s stuff again? Technorati used to be the best blog search engine by a long shot, but now I’m finding I’m using Google Blog Search more and more.

I’ve found Google Blog search to be joke compared to Technorati, Bloglines Citation Search, IceRocket and even Feedster. OK, that last one was a joke. 🙂
The point still remains that it is probably the worst blog search engine in active development today. Luckily for them, the prominent links from other Google properties are enough to give them higher marketshare than all the other players.

the only real thing keeping Technoratic alive IMO is the ranking system. *If* google or even Sphere were to come out with a blog ranking system that could replace the “popularity” of Technorati’s then they could be in serious trouble.

I like Dave Sifry and I even met his Mom, but I get no respect from Technorati.
They seem to have problem with ASP.Net blogs.

The fact that my post didn’t show (at the time of this comment) in Technorati search but did in Google blog search is why I use Google blog search for latest topic related blog search. Google blog crawling bots appears to rush in the moment an update ping is sent.
Reliability is also very important. It’s annoying to see nothing or disappearing links depending on what I time I access Technorati.
I wish the best for Dave but IMHO he must addresses these issues instead of adding difficult to explain feature like WTF.

Verdict: Fairly complete and fresh. Main problem is that first couple of results are blogroll hits which are ANCIENT but always seem to show up at the top of results. Also missing http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/blog/blogView?showComments=true&entry=3348846038 at 1:18PM PST.

The killer feature that Technorati has at this point is the ability to filter by authority and see the number of inbound links to a given blog when you’re viewing search results. If someone else offers that feature, there’s really no reason I can think of to return to the vagaries and sporadically failing searches of Technorati.Todd, you’re right, and Don, you’re right, things like WTF make me wonder WTF they’re doing at Technorati to be competitive!!

It’s sad that Technorati is struggling having taken the lead on blog search before now, However I would like to see them buy a site like mediarati.com and turn it into a social media in other to continue to be relevant.
