SJSU’s podcasting class sold out

Steve Sloan just wrote me and said the podcasting classes that they are doing at SJSU are sold out. It’s great seeing a University innovating and trying something new. Congrats Steve for coming up with a new class and sticking with it, even after it seemed that everyone was against you. (I spoke at the first class last semester and it was a really innovative class — every one is recorded and put up as a podcast).

  1. Robert, The University of Miami also has a class: Podcasting and Web Development. I think education is the key to moving forward the industry, and Universities with education on topics such as podcasts are greatly helping. If you’re ever in town (sorry, you’ll be missing WeMedia), it would be great to have you involved with an event. Talk to you soon.

  3. This is great! I love seeing cutting edge, non-mainstream (hey, to institutions like these, podcasting is cutting edge!) technologies gain some footing like this. I recently researched degrees from UNLV and was dismayed to see the complete lack of anything really “new.” At least the photography degree has some Digital Imaging classes…

  5. SJSU has done a great job of keeping on top of current trends for the benefit of their students – I think they deserve a great deal more respect in the wider education community – your post is a great step in that direction towards recognizing this.

Stay tuned for more announcements on this – I think this is the most important thing we can do together as a community – and it is core to our mission. More importantly will be the intersection between for profits, not for profits, the education system, big media and the passionate individuals who are making it happen. When we start to mix formal and informal education in the right way, things are going to really start to take off…

  7. I go to SJSU and I didn’t realize we had a podcasting class. I guess I’ll try to make it a elective next semester then.

  9. Here is a podcast appliance that is targeted for universities: http://boxpopu.li … they also now have a podcast hosting service: http://podasp.com … The co-founder, Chris Dawson, has some interesting opinions about the role of podcasting and open standards at universities here: http://webcastinabox.com/openminded/2006/04/the_problem_with_itunes_u.html

I agree that it is important for universities to maintain standard rss podcasts with mp3 audio as an alternative to their iTunes U podcast offerings. Berkeley does a great job of this here: http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_feeds.php
