You might have heard the news that Jim Allchin retired today from running the Windows team at Microsoft. But, you might not know that he’s an accomplished guitarist.
Well, now that he’s retired, I’m sure he’ll want to play with Don Box, or Steve Ball, or some other Microsoft musicians (geeks are often great musicians).
Well, on stage at Demo as I type this is “eJamming” which hooks up band members all over the world. Really cool. They have a guitarist on stage that’s playing with other musicians all over the world.
It’s true. A lot of geeks are great musicians. What would kind of music would Jim Allchin play, though, is the question… he’s an older man.
Mel Torme…
Barely Manenough, er Barry Manilow… er, nevermindNow if Jim can play like Joe Satriani or Van Halen, then that’s something else entirely…

He plays a pretty rocking guitar! I used to have some samples, but they pulled them down for some reason.

I heard Jim play some Santana like tune (may have been a Santana cover) in front of a large crowd at an MS event and he was very good.

Now he can go get his Mac!!!!
In December, during the Iowa antitrust trial, Comes v. Microsoft, Inc., being held in Polk County District Court [Iowa], a 2004 email from Jim Allchin to Steve Balmer and Bill Gates was publicly released in which Allchin said that Microsoft had lost sight of what customers need and that he himself would buy a Mac, if he didn’t work for Microsoft:
“I’m not sure how the company lost sight of what matters to our customers, both business and home, the most, but in my view we lost our way. I think our teams lost sight of what bug-free means, what resilience means, what full scenarios mean, what security means, what performance means, how important current applications are, and really understanding what the most important problems our customers face are. I see lots of random features and some great vision, but that does not translate into great products… I would buy a Mac today if I was not working at Microsoft.”
Congratulations, Mr. Allchin, you’re now free to get that Apple Mac you’ve wanted for years!

He probably quit because his Media Center Extenders don’t work with Vista. Vista is a real pain, now that I can’t get my extenders working, PROOF that VISTA is just a stemaing pile of DRM Bull!

There’s been something very like eJamming around since 2004, I think: http://ninjam.com/ . It’s free and apparently works pretty well, though I’ve not used it myself.
