The WiFi guy…

Ed Saenz is the guy who named “WiFi.” Among other things (he does names for Nissan, too). We have an interesting chat about naming and some of the things marketers have to think about when they come up with names.

Oh, I’m back on blog vacation. My email has actually gone up in the past few days. 746 waiting. Sigh.

Heheh, he doesn’t like the name “iPod.” You’ll have to listen to understand why not, though.

  1. Question…Is it me or is the volume level really low? I had to crank my volume (MacBook-Pro) way up to even hear it and it was still low.
    Warning to the youth of the world…Playing in a band can be injurious to your hearing. Standing in front of a bass amp for a few years catches up with you later in life.

  3. No problem Robert, was just curious. But, I do find that PodCasts are all over the board when it comes to any kind of consistant audio. I have the same problem with some of the BusinessWeek podcasts. About the only one who seems consistant is Leo, of course with his radio background that’s probably to be expected.

  5. PXLated: audio is hard. Most of the professionals have three people running camera. One, a director, two, a camera person, three, an audio person. Some even have two audio people: one to run the microphones, one to keep the audio levels right.

  7. I agree, it’s hard 🙂
    Somewhere I read/heard the best way is to mike everyone separately (even with individual recorders) and sync it all up later, including with video. To get a sync sound I guess they used something like a gong, something you can really pick out with a spike on a waveform in editing. I guess one would have to do that for each scene if one starts/stops the camera.
    Have you ever heard this?

    PodTech? We have about 30 corporate clients who pay us to do everything from consulting with them as to how to get involved with the social media world, to producing podcasts and videos for them, to advertising and sponsorships of other media properties. We’re also an advertising distribution network (think Google) for a whole family of content producers (people like Loren Feldman and Eric Rice and about 30 others so far).

  13. iPod is a fine name. As Ed seemed to suggest – the brand behind the name is exceptionally strong, so the name itself doesn’t need to carry as much weight.

    …maybe that last bit was my own interpretation.

    And the name seems at least somewhat related to the device for me. What is an iPod? It’s my pod filled with digital stuff. i = personalization, pod = container.
