Hope Sinterklaas visited you

Everyone we’ve met here has explained to us the Sinterklaas tradition. Today kids are waking up all over the Nederlands to find that a carrott they left in their shoes has been replaced with candy and other goodies. Over the weekend there was a big Sinterklaas event (which is their version of Santa Claus, only he doesn’t live in the North Pole, prefering to reside in Spain instead — sounds smarter to me).

Anyway, we gotta run and get to the airport, be traveling all day today. See ya Wednesday. Oh, I left you some goodies over on my link blog and a new video shows up everyday over on ScobleShow, whether I’m traveling or not.

  1. Tonight is the big night 🙂 and than the old man leaves for Spain again. This morning only i saw 2 Sinterklasen at 2 schools he also has “hulp Sinterklasen” (helpers).

    Next time you are visiting Holland and want to visit good old/new Commodore please let me know and i will show you our latest gadgets :p

  3. Nobody ever wonders how it is possible that this old man is able to travel with his huge boat from Madrid (in the middle of the Spanish peninsula) to the Netherlands!

    As a coincidence, the day the Dutch celebrate Sinterklaas, the Spanish have a national holiday. Are they so glad this old men is out of the country for a few days????

In the Eastern Europe(and some Western Europe countries as well) Sinterklaas is replaced by Saint Nicholas, which is Santa’s buddy/friend/relative, visiting kids in the night of 5 /early morning of 6 december . While Santa brings toys and the Eastern Bunny brings clothes, St Nicholas brings mostly sweets, leaving them in the children’s boots (but only if they’ve been cleaned/taken care of).
    The lazy/naughty kids only wake up to find some wooden sticks in their boots.

  25. Alex, actually Sinterklaas is just what the Dutch “Sint Klaas” evolved into over the years. Klaas, on its turn, is the shortened version of Nikolaas, which, is well pretty much Nicholas. Now you guess what “sint” means 😉

  39. They do this in Germany, too — Nicholaus visits on the 5th to give candy in a boot, as a sort of way to tide children over until the Main Event. My mom (a German immegrant) did this for me and my siblings, and so I got to pass it along this morning to my stepdaughter. (Mom helpfully provided the candy — must ensure that the German heritage is being passed on, I guess, no matter the cost.)
