Hugh Macleod’s cartoons get me to smile.

  1. Ralph: one thing I’ve learned about critics, they rarely know how to do anything other than complain.

So, why don’t you prove us wrong and put your own cartoons on your blog?

  5. @2 Ralph wasn’t complaining; he was making an accurate observation. Although one could say that is Hugh’s uniqueness. But to say he was complaining is inaccurate. And your response was childish. Why does everyone have to have a blog in order to engage with or be relevant to you?

  7. Well, his drawing’s ok for what it is. A British cartoonist, Austin, was a pretty basic drawer but was one of the most consistenly funny cartoonists – The Guardian (UK) and The New Scientist benefitted, particularly. This one for eg:

Hugh Macleod isn’t funny, or thought-provoking, or anything else worth anything much, I think.

I can draw, by the way, and I’ll put up one or two of mine in a bit. Don’t know how that would or wouldn’t validate your view of Macleod, though.

  9. Nice cartoons.

I usually don’t stay on a blog. But your blog makes me smile. A good cartoon can light up my day. More reasons to come back to your blog.

  11. David, I checked out your blog and came to pretty much a similar conclusion about your work. Basking in mediocrity like a beached whale, I thought. But that’s OK, I concur with your point about Austin.

Cartooning is not about draftsmanship. Cartooning is about cartooning. Our mutual friend Ralph kinda forgot that.

  13. Hugh: I like your cartoon. Simple and to the point. Cartooning is about cartooning.

Others: Why making a simple laugh so complicated? If I can make you laugh, it is cartoon.

  15. Hugh, who’s ‘our mutual friend Ralph’? And my blog isn’t ‘my work’, btw.

I really can’t see why you feel any more qualified than anyone else to comment on cartooning. Just because you doodle and call them cartoons doesn’t make them so, does it?

  17. Er…Hugh, ‘higher insights’? See, that’s the sort of clumsy language you use in your cartoons. English your first language?

I guess you are annoyed. You keep coming back here to post a comment. I just wish you’d answer a simple question.

Who on earth is ‘Ralph’? Did you mistake me for someone else?
