Whew, the flowers showed up

Today was a day of working at home. Damn I have a lot of email. I didn’t get to my editing. Sigh. Anyway, glad the flowers showed up. That’s called “survival” for a married guy. Heheheh.

My Ford let me down, though. $600 for a 30,000 mile service, $500 for new brakes and rotors. $500 for new tires. And I have a bent wheel (I have no idea how that happened) that needs replacing too. Sigh.

Yeah, I’m paying a premium because it’s a Ford dealership, but not much. I’ll take it around and try to save a little bit on costs, though (Silicon Valley is expensive, keep that in mind). Maryam wants me to buy a new car instead. That’s called spending $20,000 to get out of a $2,000 problem.

  1. Good move on getting her flower at work. Keep your romance “white hot” like Wiki 🙂

And you are setting up a good example for those geeky guys in Silicon Valley to follow. Pay more attention to the love ones on important dates rather than digging their heads into blogs, news sites and codes on computer day and night.

It won’t hurt to declare your love in blog. It is so manly to show your love in public.

  3. I agree on the tires – the brakes+rotors sounds “more than a little” high, for a Ford Focus, as well.

There’s something to be said for keeping a friendly business relationship with your dealer, though. I’d get a quote or two on each item, then talk to the service manager: “The market rate for these is around X and Y – you’re charging 1.5X and 2Y. Can we work out a better deal?” Nice guys you want to continue paying/buying more cars from will work with you (even if it’s “sorry, our rates are non-negotiable”; if he’s insulted that you did your homework – suggesting they won’t do the work as well, or that “it MIGHT void your warranty”, etc., then it’s time to find a new dealership or even a new brand.

That Focus won’t last forever…and it WILL need more substantial repairs/maintenance along the way. Therefore, your ongoing business is worth a LOT more than ripping you off on tires. If they don’t realize that, find someone who does.
