Ahh, Giovanni Rodriguez links to a “making of a Scoble video” video. Yes, the camera was aimed at the cameraguy. Me. Transparency all around.
Google and Microsoft were both wonderful today. I got so many videos to get up. And while I was out today another 134 emails came in. I’m so deep in email deficit that I’ll never catch up. Sorry if I haven’t answered you back.

Speaking of making a video…DUDE…the Zoom H4’s are out in the USA. You don’t really need wireless mic’s with this, just shotgun, and use the Zoom for dual interviews, the mic’s are great. This is a videographer’s secret audio weapon…great for Podcaster’s too.

Ok, done a study of a few of thy vids, couple of helpful suggestions…was gonna email, but figured you see it here. 🙂
You need to one-camera shoot as if you had two. I love doing that, having only one camera, yet it looks multicam broadcast. Of course, gotta claw eyes out in Editing sometimes, but the price is well worth it.
1. Get lots of cutaways, “nods”, “hand gestures” and “thinking poses” and misc. transitional material, in tons of poses. Take at least 15 extra minutes of seemingly throw-away material.
2. Stop at the end of a question and get another angle. And switch back and forth. Keep it the same height tho, don’t go heavy on SFX, except for transitions and when can get away with it (which is not too often, but sometimes).
3. Constant feeds are only good for Events and Walk-Thrus, even then can cut and transition and get away with it (if have constant audio stream). One on one interviews are ready made material, for ‘scenes’. Cast the interviews in terms of film-like cuts…
4. No ‘fiddling with camera’ shots. Edit those out. 🙂
5. Secondary INDEPENDENT audio source. (Good for Podcasts too). But back-up audio is critical, plus if feeding directly from a board, the secondary gives you that full ambient feel. Like when doing Weddings, I want the crisp direct from board sound, married with the festive ambience. Think of baseball announcers, they sound dead without the crowd hub.
6. Clapboard between a few questions. Think in terms of movie scenes. Gotten to LOVE the clapboarding, so pro-feeling and so sound sync up. Godsend in Editing, least for me…
Ideal would be two or three camera setup with switcher, feeding into a DV Rack or to Firestore, so can pump up on NLE and encode like all out and zap to internet in as close to real time as possible. But that’s not always doable, as dual cams can kill the low-key nature. Sooo shoot with one, like you have two… 🙂
PS – That Print for Less tour was greattttt, not quite Glidecam, but darned close.

Christopher: great ideas, but that’d increase the costs on each video and interrupt the conversation. Unfortunately with internet video you gotta worry about the costs.

Point and Shoot form = Well, not much can do, outside of simple cuts. Looks raw, unprofessional.
Not interrupting the conversation = two cameras, switcher, which equals expense.
Interrupting the conversation = one camera, and better Editing. But it does “interrupt”…but then always stopping points.
But ‘best of both’ is getting non-talking extra cutaway shots and side poses, before the conversation even begins.
