I’m so jealous I’m not at PopTech. Ethan Zuckerman has a great writeup and links to the streams. This is one of the best conferences in the world.

    Some of your recent posts have been about deceptive/unethical blogging, so I thought this was something you would be interested in. Xbox.com just launched “Gamer Dad”. You can read the intro here: ( http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/personality/gamerdad/20061013-whatimdoinghere.htm )

    There are two things that strike me as deceptive/unethical even despite this not being intended to be a “blog” but rather a column. Firstly, the Xbox.com team tried to make it sound personal and not full of corporate fluff, but it still comes off as marketing speak and the proof is where they forgot to remove one of their trademark symbols: “I’ll also cover how to set up kid’s accounts on Xbox 360â„¢, and other console-specific issues.” In my experience, the only people who ever do that are legal and PR/marketing.

    But worse than that is that there already is a relatively well known Gamer Dad in the gaming world: http://www.gamerdad.com And that Gamer Dad is pissed and his doing his best to fight Microsoft on this matter. The “human” Microsoft you tried so hard to provoke seems to be walking all over the little guy again. It will be interesting to follow how they handle this situation.

  3. Richard: yup, that’s pretty bad. The Xbox team never really grokked that the best way to get good PR is simply be transparent and blog openly and interact with the customers. Sigh.
