Who has the best images of Google?

Heheh, a little cross-company smack talk going on over on the Virtual Earth blog. They link to all their competitors and say they have better imagery. Actually, what they are demonstrating is their new collections feature where you can gather together a collection of interesting places and put a link to that on your blog. Very useful! By the way, that and more are explained on other posts on the Virtual Earth blog.

Of course the Google Earth bloggers aren’t lying down in this competition. They just added a new layer feature which is very cool.

And, Ze Frank even gets into this fun too. He uses Google Earth today to show where all his “little yellow duckies” are (his viewers). Can you find me? My little Yellow Duckie is in Half Moon Bay, right by the Ritz. Ze told me I was the first member of his “ORG” and, looking at this now I see 10s of thousands of members who watch Ze Frank’s Show.

  1. hey scoble. we were just talking about you the other day. this is the first big Virtual Earth release where you didn’t visit with the niner camera. 😦 those were always the most fun meetings of the month. but glad to see you peeking into our corner of the world. If you get back to Redmond soon, stop in with your Podtech camera; We have some good stuff on the way that really needs to be seen on video!

  3. While Live Local competes well with Google Maps (beats it in many respects, I believe), they don’t have anything to compete against Google Earth, which has a big following.

However, you can actually use the brilliant Live Local/Virtual Earth imagery in a program called NASA WorldWind, if you install the Virtual Earth WorldWind plugin (Google for them). This will give you full fly-about and different viewing angles etc. over VE imagery.

The stuff you can see is stunning!

  5. From what I have seen, Virtual Earth has far better coverage in maps that Google Maps. The reason? Who knows. It all comes from a handful of map data providers, so they should be able to be even. The street where I live is an “unknow road” in Google Maps, whereas the right name is shown in Virtual Earth.
