If the big company announces something why don’t you take advantage of it and point out what you do better than the big company? That’s what Intermedia.net just did by posting “New Google service offers 24/0 support for business users.” I linked to it because it shows why I am advocating for Podtech to switch to hosted Exchange instead of sticking with Google’s suite of services.
On the other hand, check out how Steve Gillmor enters the conversation with “Beam me up, Sergey” where he posits “can we start watching more carefully who insists the Google Office strategy doesn’t exist?”
Back at ya!
Oh, aside, how did a Microsoft employee (Dare) take over top billing on TechMeme a few minutes ago on a story about Google? Damn him for taking over the conversation! Heheh.
Yeah, I can hear the PR folks in Mountain View, CA,ย popping the corks on their wine bottles saying “who cares, we got the New York Times!” while forgetting all the influencers that brought Google to this party in the first place.
Absolutely, Robert. Absolutely. Something I’ve blogged about before.
Using Google’s free services for your business, or indeed any free Web 2.0 service, is effectively handing over the keys to your business.
You mail about work over Google Mail.
You talk about work over Google Talk.
You arrange work meetings over Google Calendar.
It doesn’t take a leap of faith to realise that with all your tools of collaboration running over Google, once tools like GDrive come along, the temptation, the easiest way or working, will be to upload your potentially confidential, potentially mission critical data onto Google’s servers.
Once that happens, you don’t control your data anymore.

So what’s the difference between Google hosting your data, and WeCanHostExchange.com hosting your email, other than one if free and the other is not? They both “have access to your data”

One difference is that Google scans your data so they can serve up relevant advertisements. The paid hosting services don’t access your data at all.
You gotta give Intermedia.net credit for their sense of humor, and taking a risk with that “tongue-in-cheek” press release. Robert is right, that is how the little guy can compete with the big guy.

Paid services don’t access my data at all? So, if I need a mail message restored to my Exchange mailbox, how do they do that if they don’t access my data? I sure as hell hope a hoster accesses my data at least to back it up ;-. If you are saying traditional hosters don’t scan my data for relevant keywords, well you may be right. But that’s not my point. My point is, someone at a hosting company has the keys to the kingdom, so they CAN access my data. Enterprises have the same concern with traditional hosters as this unsubstantiated concern with Google.

Intermediate spoof PR doesn’t say much for them. One, THEY are not providing anything unique with their hosting service to enable wireless access to Exchange. That’s an OOB feature with Exchange. Their only “service” is turning it on or not.
And if I’m an enterprise I’m not sure I would tolerate 10 minutes downtime a week from Intermediate. Particularly if I’m a financial company. ๐ With Intermediate I’m still guessing when that 10 minutes will occur ๐
The ad thing is such a overblown concern. I’ve been using GMail for close to a year now and can’t tell you when the last time I noticed an ad was.

damn these rants
“No wireless access. Where Intermedia.NET hosted Exchange gives users access to information via BlackBerry, Treo, Q or any other device, Google has bucked this trend, perhaps suggesting that wireless email is in fact a productivity-sapping distraction for employees.”

Hosted Exchange is the way to go — over other services. Interestingly, you can get some great deals from them. Right now,
Intermedia.NET is offering a FREE trial of its Exchange 2007 for December. They’re also giving away a free copy of Outlook.
