Jot updates its wiki service to pass “Blink” test

Why did I like WetPaint and PBWiki? Because they were drop-dead simple to get in and setup. Just enter a URL. I didn’t like Jot because they forced you to look at too many choices before you got to that stage. But, Jot just shipped a new version and WOW it’s a lot better and once you get in it has a ton of features too. I like how it shows a normal, non-geeky user, what’s possible once inside too.

What wiki tool passes your “Blink” test? What is important to you in a wiki tool?

  1. Robert,

Just in case you would like to create and include a thumbnail image of all the sites you are blogging about, I thought that you would like to know about http://www.thumbpress.net

Just paste in the URI, then grab the image – a simple free service for all bloggers. The images are stored on photobucket and you’ll get the URL to post in your blog.

  3. What I’d like to see are more hosted wiki applications.

Sure, theres MoinMoin and Wikimedia and others, but all of them miss the simplicity that Jot and others offer.

Jot, then again, has a version you can install on your own site but its a tad too expensive for the casual user.

Long story short, I don’t want to commit to a URL before I even know what I can do, then shockingly the tiny print “pricing” stands out at me, I then see a page describing services that are free elsewhere (…….ggo ggooogo goog ogog GOOGLE!), then I see a button that says “click here to try”.
I think ok.. I can try. thats good no commitment.

But alas – it took me back to the index page, which (with my short attention span) I have already deemed a page I don’t care for.

Well, Firefox support for one. Which is why Sharepoint 2007 is such a non-starter as a Wiki platform. It kills me that MS still doesn’t “get” cross-browser support.

  11. Blink test = It better work the first time

How did JotSpot do? Horrible, timed out, froze browser. Then went back using Safari instead of FireFox and got this:

Unfortunately, there was a problem creating your account.
Our servers were too busy to create your account, but you can try again with a different web address and things should work better for you. If you are still having problems, please contact our support staff.

Thats right, try a different name. So I did, and guess what? it bombed again 🙂

  13. I discovered http://www.near-time.com last month from a comment someone left on a blog, I believe it was this blog. I am very surprised that they don’t come up in coversations like this more often. I think alot of it has to do with Techcrunch to be honest. I don’t think Arrington would feature a “competitor” and so their exposure just isn’t as great as some of these other services. It’s not for everybody, but its worth a look.

  15. Craig – thanks – last update of CSS did that – I’ve made a correction and it works fine now, thanks for mentioning it – a rare thing it seems – thousands of people will notice something and only a handful bother to inform.

http://www.thumbpress.net – already processed more than 800 images for people!

  17. we liked http://www.centraldesktop.com for our business. Jot was too complex for our new users and the ‘free wikis’ were too techy (and not supported…which was important for our business).

And, Central Desktop did pass our blinktest….we selected a template and were good to go…..out of the box.
