Why don’t positive blogs outweigh negative ones?

Seshadri PV asks a good question: why don’t the more than 3,100 Microsoft employee blogs get more attention, on balance, than Mini-Microsoft?

Human nature. We like shit disturbers more than we like people who are calm, rational, nice, and who post code on their blogs.

It’s not a fair world. The deck is stacked against Microsoft. For the same reason I root against the NY Yankees. We wanna tear down the big guy.

I told a friend the other day the marketing challenge for a big company is to appear small and the challenge for a small company is to appear big.

It’s why a $250 camera worked wonders for Microsoft and why a $4,000 camera is working wonders for PodTech.

  1. Negative blogs, i think is the whole essence of blogging. Nobody wants to come and read common sense.

  4. I think it also has to do with the fact that MiniMicrosoft is particularly interesting and well written. A good blog written by a good writer will always have eyeballs.

  6. Does each of the 3100 blogs get the same attention as Mini … (or indeed this one did when it was a MSFT employee blog) Of course not.
Does *the sum of* all those 3100 blogs reach more people and do more good than Mini.
I beleive so, which is why do mine – and why I’m trying out the cheap camera (see

    What a CROCK !

Yeah, the vitriol against Microsoft has nothing to do with it’s despicable behaviour over the past two decades and the corpses of developers and companies left in its wake. Nothing to do with “We don’t have a monopoly. We have market share” arrogance in the face of a DOJ conviction. Nothing to do with the crappy malware infested “most secure” Operating Systems that “customers” have had to endure. Nothing to do with the “Linux is a Cancer” one day and “Hey we love Open Source” the next day attitude. Nothing to do with the backdoor funding of SCO, the “protection racket” of Windows One Care, the missing pillars of Longhorn, the BSA Gestapo … one could go on for ever.

Heck, even with gas prices at $3 a gallon people don’t hate Exxon-Mobil as much as they hate Microsoft. Yeah, it has all do with “tearing down the big guy”.

This is not a rant of a 13 y.o slashdotter. This is someone that was an ardent user and supporter of Microsoft from DOS to XP. My conscience finally got the better off me and I swore off this disgusting company for good 5 years ago. And the world is full of people like me. That is why people anti Microsoft sentiment is so popular. Not because they are the New York Yankees.

  10. If mini is considered a “shit disturber” than so should you. You did for Microsoft what mini is still doing.

  12. Hash: of course that fits into it too but one thing you’re forgetting is that we don’t use Exxon’s products very often. Heck, I have a long commute. 45 minutes on most days. So I use Exxon’s products only 1.5 hours a day. I use Microsoft’s products about 16 hours a day. So, the flaws in Microsoft bother me a whole lot more than the flaws in Exxon’s products (which are mostly concerning price).

And why do you care about all those things you listed? Because Microsoft has a product that most people use. I wrapped up all your words into just a few: people hate Microsoft cause it’s the top dog. If you’re a small little startup no one cares that you do such mean things. And, in fact, they’ll encourage you to do such things to beat the big dog.

Chris: I’m using a Sony. I’ll get you the model number later. It’s the top of the line prosumer HDTV model, though.

  14. Robert,

    Paraphrasing your response…

People (self included) hate Microsoft cause it’s the top dog AND they do such mean things. Moreover, I don’t buy the “lil’ guys are allowed / encouraged to do mean things” statement. Microsoft gets away with murder because of their clout. They have a monopoly on the desktop and thus have their customers by their proverbial balls. If a startup tried to pull half the stunts Microsoft pull son a routine basis, they will be wiped off the map because their clients/customers will just go elsewhere.

Apparently based on your remarks, you seem to think that Microsoft did/does/is doing nothing wrong. And they are/were being picked on because of their size. I completely disagree so I guess we are at an impasse.

Kids don’t hate bigger kids on school playgrounds because they are big. Kids only hate them if they are BULLIES.

  16. 3,100 Marketing droids, with varying degrees of posting frequency, moving around dirt, news and code, aren’t going to make impacts beyond their respective niches. And Mini is more than just a rant blog, it’s seemingly actually working on fundamental change and it’s mostly internal. It gets attention, as that’s the pulse of the company now.

If the company wasn’t so dysfunctional and could get Vista out the door, people’d be more talking about that. Can’t blame human nature wholesale, Microsoft has its own blood on hands.

  18. Mind if I ask what kind of $4,000 camera is working wonders for PodTech?

Sony HVRZ1U. It’s no Panasonic, but for a Sony, quite the spec’s. I love the ranges, it’s a agnostic format style of cam (HDV, DVCAM, and DV), 60i, 50i, 30, 25, 24 frames.

But SERIOUS downsides of not being true 24p, it’s Cineframe emu, sucks in comparison to the DVX100A or the AG-HVX200 24P. It’s all a HD cam, Sony screwed it royally with 24P here.

Bottom line: all around great, EXCEPT for 24P, shame that Sony had to drop the ball on such an important point. I am still a Panasonic AG-HVX200 film-look type, but the Sony HVRZ1U is not bad at all.

  20. Yeah, Panasonic does seem to be doing quite well in the prosumer market with the DVX100a and HVX200. I’m looking at the DVX100, but Canon just released several new HD models (to follow up the GL2 and its brethren) which means Panasonic can’t be too far behind with upgrading their product line (bringing down the price on the HVX200, I hope)

  26. The 3100 microsoft employee blogs *do* get more attention than mini does.

There are tons of people who only read a few blogs, and don’t even know that mini exists, and wouldn’t care.

Mini is interesting to MS employees and a small group of bloggers who care about those things. Now, if you want to talk about the human nature of that sort of blogger, fine, but I don’t think that describes the vast majority of people.

Long tail, my friend. Long tail.
