Road Trip!

Hey, there’s a road trip ahead. A group of videobloggers and Patrick and me are getting in a minivan on Thursday afternoon and we’re gonna drive from San Francisco to Emigrant, Montana. Stops in Sacramento, Reno, Salt Lake City, Jackson Hole are on the schedule.

Anywhere else we should stop? Want us to come and visit you? You’ll be famous. Or something. Your video will be on the Internets. If the tubes remain unclogged. Maybe if we’re really lucky we’ll get on Valleywag.

Maybe we should do the “Valleywag Tour of Famous Datacenters in the Middle of Nowhere, USA”. This entry on Valleywag about Google’s new fantastic datacenter gave me that idea. Maybe Sergey and Larry could fly their plane up to give us a tour?

  1. Better yet, maybe the Google Party Plane will come and save you from having to travel the country in a freaking mini-van! Come on Google – fly everyone to “Off the Grid”! Oh – and come pick me up in San Antonio!

  3. You could come from San Francisco on 4 to Oakley on your on 160 to Sacramento to see me, and the ex zynfidal capital the world. Instead growing grapes we are now growning houses. But traveling 160 you go along the Sacramento river to the state capital and I think it is much nicer than just going up 80.

  5. Scoble, give me a shout on e-mail if you make it to The Dalles and I can get you out to the site but there is no way we can get in unless Sergey and Larry come with you. There are pretty crazy about security.

  9. If you can and have time you should stop by Moab, Utah. They have really good places to camp outside or just visit. Been there a few times myself and enjoyed it.

As I recall, Robert likes BBQ — that’s good Summer fare, too. Midtown Sac might appeal to his Seattle roots. Lots of nice little places to eat and lots of color.

    Get your motor runnin’…
    Head out on the highway…
    Lookin’ for some WiFi…

    EXT. ROADSIDE CAMPFIRE — NIGHT

JACK NICHOLSON takes another hit off the joint and begins to ramble.

Well, the Googlers are people, just like us. From within our own Solar System. Except that their society is more evolved. They don’t have any managers, because engineers don’t need managers. Our leaders have repressed this information because of the tremendous shock it would cause to our antiquated systems. Now, the result of this is that Googlarians have contacted peoples in all walks of life, in an advisory capacity. Eventually, the Googlerites will cause man to have a godlike control over his own destiny. But they must do this covertly, because of the shock it would cause to our antiquated systems.

I told you not to pick up hitchhikers.

  18. Robert,

Know More Media would be glad to organize a meet and greet for lunch on Friday if you make it to Salt Lake by then. Then you could meet a bunch of the Utah crowd all in one place.

Let me know if you are interested.

Ok, scratch TCP/IP Rider. The new script is called Broadband Mountain…

You ever get the feelin’… I don’t know, er… when you’re in town and someone looks at you all suspicious, like he knows? And then you go out on the pavement and everyone looks like they know too?

    SCOBLE
Yeah! And then they ask you to fix their computer.

    ENNIS
That’s… not exactly what I meant.

    SCOBLE
Tell you what, though. Truth is, sometimes I miss Microsoft so much I can hardly stand it. I wish I could quit Microsoft.

    ENNIS
    You did quit Microsoft.

    SCOBLE
    Oh yeah.

  24. So, we’re leaving San Francisco at 2 p.m. Thursday. We’ll drive straight through to Salt Lake City. That’ll take about 12 hours, so we’ll be in Salt Lake City at 2 a.m.

We’ll catch some sleep, then get up for breakfast. So, how about breakfast at 9 a.m.? How about someplace near the Temple?

On the way home maybe we’ll stop in Sacramento, but we’ll breeze through at about 4 p.m. on the way to Montana and want to get more distance.

  26. Ryan, we might on the way home. Not sure yet, though.

On the way there, though, we’ll be flying through at 5 p.m. tonight so doesn’t make much sense to stop, sorry.

We’ll do something else in Sacramento soon, though, since that’s only two hours from where I am.

  28. Right behind you dude. I’m moving to Richmond, VA on 8/17. I’ll be taking the same trip but continuing on to Mt. Rushmore, Chicago, Niagra Falls, Albany, Gettysburg/Antietam, D.C. and Richmond.
Obviously if you’re in Jackson, then you have to do Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Keep us posted on any cool happenings. I’m finding nothing but sugar-coated poop nuggets on the net. The net is like tv, a bazillion sites and too much crap. So looking forward to what you have to offer.

Great experience, wish I could have been a part of his crew…neat group of folks, the likes of we don’t get too many of around here. It was a breath of fresh-idea air, if you will, so I’ll be paying attention for the next round…you do take stragglers from Montana, don’t you?
