Calling all dead programmers and unemployed videobloggers: Off the Grid Camp starts August 6

Hey, we love deadprogrammers and unemployedvideobloggers (great name for a blog, by the way, anyone have a better one?). But, plans are progressing for a campout that I’m calling “OffTheGrid” at my mom’s house (near Chico Hot Springs in Montana).

The details? You’re welcome. We still have some floor space to put up more people (beds are all gone, sorry). It’ll be August 6 through 9th. If you’re interested in coming, please send me email. robertscoble@hotmail.com.

There’s camping and lodging nearby (I’d recommend staying at Chico Hot Springs, we’ll definitely have several sessions over there).

Purpose? Get off the grid for a while and do something creative together. Hike. Swim. Fish. That kind of thing.

Dave Winer says he’s coming. We have several families coming. It’s an open invite. Anyone can come. We’ll do some geeky stuff too, but maybe that’ll include using GPS’s and doing a treasure hunt or something like that.

Update: Matt Griffith says the area is stunning and wishes he could come and there’s a ton of Geocaches in the area.

  1. Chico Hot Springs has Wifi. My EVDO card works there, too, but we’ll try to stay off the grid as much as possible.

Hey, if World War III breaks out my mom even owns part of a nuclear fallout shelter and enough food to feed hundreds of people for months.

  7. Sounds like the perfect time to morph my previous Technology Stragist and IT Consultant life with my current 4×4 Weekend life. Robert, I’ll send you mail, but I thin this would be good for me and fun too!

  9. If you want to hold a future event that is seriously “off the grid”, then you can hold it out here on the Outer Hebrides. That’s an archipelago off the west coast of Scotland. There’s enough accommodation, and the standard pursuits are exploring deserted beaches:

…drinking local whisky, sitting around peat fires, ceilidhs (music and song in the Gaelic language), and eating local fish.

For people who still need their fix, there is broadband, and in a few places, wi-fi.

  11. I just went for a week without the internet and I really struggled!! although I guess being around other nerds would be better than having the internet, right??

Well I can’t come to you’re little gathering, not unless I suddenly get the time off work and a few hundred £’s to get the plane from the UK to USA.

  13. Sounds cool, thank you Robert – pencil me in! If someone is coming in from the Spokane area, please contact me (’cause it would be nicer for me to hitch a ride than to rent a car at the airport)…

  15. Jean, unfortunately I won’t be online much during the campout. I will be doing some video blogs, though, which I’ll be happy to share after I get home.

Udo, I’ll probably be driving through Spokane and will have an extra seat! I was hoping not to have to come back to Washington, though, but wouldn’t mind going out of my way.

  17. This is awesome Robert. I have plans to head to Colorado that week myself. I will be in the mountains enjoying microbrews. It will be good to get a break from the screen.

“OffTheGrid” should always be suffixed by (TM)or Trademark. This gives notice to the public of your intention to eventually file for Federal name protection with the Patent and Trademark Office. If you eventually put the name on a Shirt, cup or whatever, tell the graphic artist, printer, etc, to always affix the symbol (TM) in the circle. But, never put the (R) for registered in the circle until you actually receive a trademark registration number from the Patent and Trademark office.

When you file your application for a trademark, select the purpose category of: “Intentions to use the name is a trade or business”. This gives you more leeway to prove that you are actually satisfying the requirements for using the name in a trade or business, rather than choosing the option: “Presently using the name (or mark) in a trade or business.
