I'm seeing some things on the blogs that just chap my hide.
First, I love Microsoft and Microsoft did not lose me — at least as a supporter and friend. I am not throwing away my Tablet PC or my Xbox or my other Microsoft stuff. 🙂
Second, my management team is awesome and I don't have a beef with them at all. They have ALWAYS supported me. I have, in my pocket, a corporate American Express card and they never have questioned any of my expenses. The reason I shared rooms with other bloggers is because I always treated Microsoft as a startup. I don't believe it's proper to waste shareholder resources if you don't need to.
Third, I wasn't, and am not, frustrated at Microsoft. I've never had more opportunities available to me. In fact, I am due to spend a day with ImagineCup contestants and Bill Gates later this month.
Fourth, believe it or not, but no one at Microsoft has complained to me about my views for a very long time. In fact, the harsher I got the more support I got. Friday I visited with Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun Microsystems. Management at Microsoft didn't say a thing about that. Imagine if your employees went to your fiercest competitor and had a very public lunch, wouldn't you be up in arms? Not at Microsoft. At Microsoft I am encouraged to change the world and make things better for our customers.
Fifth, I've never been told not to travel to any conference by anyone at Microsoft and my travel expenses were always approved. I was encouraged to meet with developers wherever they lived. And, it is my job to go around to Microsoft offices worldwide and interview employees about the technologies they are building. At many conferences, where I was speaking about non-Microsoft stuff, I didn't feel it was appropriate to charge our shareholders for those expenses. That was my decision, not my boss's.
Sixth, how do you know that the company didn't move heaven and hell to keep me happy? They did. I have the best job in the tech world. Bar none. I got to meet and interview and influence the best people in the world. Career decisions are personal and opportunity and growth require thinking about a lot of different things, not just one or two. I've turned down quite a few offers for more money than I'm now making.
Seventh, there is a lot more positive PR to come out of my mouth about Microsoft. It is the best big company in the world (and I've been lucky to meet and study quite a few of the world's best companies lately).
Eighth, I'm not the only blogger at Microsoft. There are about 3,000 of them here. They are not having the plug pulled on them. They changed the world. I just was the cheerleader.
So, what about the other news? This is a rapidly-evolving part of my life. I just made this decision and it got out before I was completely ready to talk about it. I invite you to meet with me at the VLoggerCon tomorrow evening at 3 to 6 p.m. in San Francisco where we'll talk about it further (and I'll post again tomorrow about what's going on in my life and why I made this decision).
Oh, and thanks Niall Kennedy for your post. I really appreciate your friendship and am so glad you're at Microsoft.

Robert, I am definitely sad to see you leave Microsoft. You were a huge asset to the company and helped to change the way that Microsoft communicates with its customers. I am sure you will be doing great things at PodTech, but you will be missed over here.

Robert, I know that you have been creating video content on Channel Nine for years and doing a great job blogging, but I have always felt that you should do an audio podcast. I think it is great that you will be blogging and podcasting for John’s PodTech.net.
I am sure that doing what you have done over the years at Microsoft has not been easy, but I do believe that they have treated you with respect. You are the kind of person that builds respect. You also exude positive energy and have eternal optimisim.

I wonder who’s going to take up a general-purpose blog for MS now? It’s great that they have a million different blogs for every little project, but where’s the wide view? A lot of people want to hear one voice on a variety of topics important to the company, just like Google does in their blog. I’m not aware of any other blog like that from MS.

See, Scoble, you don’t have skills with computers, or at least not to the level that you SHOULD have in a posistion such as yours. I had to correct you in the Vista post, because you didn’t understand about MD5 and SHA-1 hashes for comparing data. See, that right there tells me (along with other issues) that you don’t know what you’re talking about.
I frequently use an OpenBSD server at my house, and along with being virus-proof and spyware/adware proof, I can do EVERYTHING I can with Windows. So, I just don’t understand how you can talk about Windows like it’s the best thing since sliced bread, when the reality is that it’s riddled with so much crap.
And the Vista bloat! Geez, why do I need 15GB of free space! I can install OpenBSD 3.9 with only about 250MB of actual file space. I’m getting sick of all this crap, because you and Microsoft are lying about your products. Microsoft keeps trying to be better (example: UAC in Vista) but even UAC sucks. Have you EVER spent any time using and learning a *nix system? Hell, UNIX systems came out like 30 years ago, and UNIX is STILL dominating Windows even to this day.

Your biggest draw was your ability to get access to the inside word from within MS and report it. I know that there are now 3,000 other people carrying the flag now but they are doing it in a much more formal and official capacity. They also lack the organisation wide view, they blog on their bit of a bit or a product group. This will be a big loss to MS and they need to breed a Scobleizer Mk2 fast.
In your new role you wont have the ability to get to the heart of the issue from inside, you will now just be another press hack who can be passed off to PR dept. Whilst this might take you back I think it will be a culture shock.
Anyway enough of my negative rambling – mostly borne out of loss of a source. Go for it!

Robert, I’m thrilled for you and hopeful that Microsoft backs the movement up and taps an equally stong blogger/evangelist to step into your shoes. They may *think* that role is already being served in various pockets around the organization… But, anyone who can ferret out the details like you did or have the kinds of access you have… will be far more effective than us keeping up with an incomplete batch of RSS feeds/blogs.
That, more than anything, will tell us how committed they are to the trail you cut for them. We’ll see. And, again, congratulations!

I think I’m about to re-subscribe to your blog . . .
Admittedly, I used to read you, but started to tune you out then eventually unsubscribed. I think I’m allergic to evangelists. Nothing personal. But I’ve always supported you (especially in all those hallway conversations) in your enthusiasm, your sincerity, and your right to assert your views whether pro-Microsoft or sometimes contrary and controversial. You changed the company. And for the better, I hope. Time will tell. Let’s hope that Ray Ozzie can realize such change, too.

Sometimes it is good to find something new. Just quit a tech job in an international software company myself. Got enough money to take 6 months off, still enjoying that. 🙂
Everyone should try and keep themselves more or less happy and strive to be the best you can be. Doesn’t have to be something wrong with the company in order for you to need something new.

You’ve grown on me over the last few years and I look foward to reading your blog more than just about any. It’s seems that not even the brightest stars can change the course of a sinking ship. I have seen the future, it aint on the horizon, it isn’t a grand Vista, it is in the little things, that’s where the biggest changes occur. It was an exciting time at Microsoft, and as a customer it was exciting as well. Microsoft has lost more than a single employee, it has lost a conduit to it’s inner humanity as a corporation.

Good luck sir. Hopefully someone will fill the gap… Your kind of wierdly unbiased opinions about the company that I have spent my career around has been very refreshing. If every company had someone who could both love the company AND be critical publicly, the corporate world would be a better place.

Yeah, it is only a company that has such a truly unique way of managing their employees “visionary” that can rise to the levels that they have. I cant imagine such tolerance in most industries. “Brains and techies” seem to need a whole different way of handling in order to allow them to express themselves and to bring out their true, creative innner geek. It’s mind boggling how Microsoft is still very far from being a competitor for Google or even Yahoo. I searched for medical and health information and even ASK.com was a better resource than Microsoft. Very disappointing.
