We’re “Lost” in HDTV

Someone save me. Maryam got a set of Lost's first season from a friend and we're totally hooked. Watched it until midnight last night. What a show. Now I understand why people talk about it so much. (I was too busy blogging to watch much TV, but now that I got my big-screen it is just too tempting. Having a big screen is totally changing our evenings).

Oh, I see Sony just announced new HDTV screens. That's just my luck. I spend $4,000 on a screen and they come out with new ones! (I knew they would, but seeing as there's no 1080p content out there yet other than a few BlueRay and HD-DVD's, it just didn't interest me). It'll be interesting to see the difference between 1080i and 1080p.

  1. Hey, Robert; I had the exact same experience when I picked up 24 Season 1. My girlfriend and I couldn’t stop watching. I lost a lot of sleep; but it was worth it; great show!

I’ll have to do “Lost,” too, but I’ll plan for it this time…

BTW, Costco has a great 50″ plasma tv for under 2 grand (just reduced it another $300). Price & quality on the unit make it a great value.

  3. Angelo: yes, I’ve seen those sets, but they aren’t close to as good as the Sony sets if you look into it.

  5. Ha, good to see you’re enjoying the TV. Yeah, Lost is a big big favorite of our readers. You’ve gotta catch the broadcasts or DVR it to check it out in HD, DVD quality even doesn’t compare.

They just do a great job making it visually appealing.

  7. And now the bad news: the Season 2 DVD won’t be out for 4 months! Believe me, when you’ve reached the end of Season 1, you won’t appreciate that fact. You’ll know how those of us who watch the show “live” feel about the equally long wait until Season 3.

I have to echo the earlier poster: If you haven’t seen Season 1 of “24,” then that should be next on your list.

  9. “Lost” is an incredible show. Very addicitive. I’ve hooked at least a dozen people on it just from showing them the first episode. It’s definitely habit forming. Lots of blogs about it, too. The executive producers have a very entertaining weekly podcast at http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/podcasts/ .

Buena Vista did an excellent job on the Season 1 presentation. It looks almost as good as originally broadcast in HDTV–at least on my Samsung.

  11. Big differences between your TV and the new ones are depth (the new ones are supposed to be 1″ to 2″ thinner), width (they moved the speakers to the bottom of the cabinet instead of being out on those elephant ears – sony got a lot of complaints about those) and of course the 1080p input, which for most people won’t make a bit of difference.

Currently, the only people who would gain anything from the 1080P inputs are those with outboard or PC based scalers/deinterlacers, but if you’ve got enough money for a good one of those, you probably are using a projector anyhow.

And personally, I don’t think you’d see much of a difference at all between 1080p and 1080i…same amount of data and resolution is passed for each, just in one (1080i) the data is broken up into halves at a rate of 60 fields (half frames) per second which then need to be put together.

Also, you knew that Sony was coming out with newer units, but wanted one now and not in September so you bought…You made the right choice for where you were at the time. Same as me. 🙂

  13. @Rick – I can understand the frustration of the wait for Lost Season3, because so far Season2 (about ep5 here in the uk) has been a bore… I loved Season1 but 2 seems to have Lost its way… anything to do with the show creator bobbing off to do other things I wonder?

Also yes, if you haven’t watched “24” then you must watch Season 1 – BUT ONLY Season 1!!!!

  15. Chris: Wow, I’m really surprised to hear that. We can only speak in generalities here, but I thought the 3-parter to open S2 was riveting. There wasn’t an episode the whole season I didn’t like. I’d go so far as to say that no series has had a better first two seasons.

And you’re really giving “24” short shrift by dissing the last 4 seasons. Season 3 is the only one I had major issues with (particularly the first third of the season set in Mexico).

  19. Chris: Forgot to mention that co-creator JJ Abrams left the show after the 7th episode of *S1*. Since then, it’s been helmed by the other co-creator, Damon Lindelof, along with Carlton Cuse. That will continue in S3 as well.

  21. Welcome to the mysterious episodes of Lost, Robert. I’ve been hooked up on it and it’s not good. You are sure to be entertained for the next 45 hours, but watch out, the last episode of the second season was just broadcasted a few days ago, and the third season only starts in November.
And of course, the second season couldn’t have ended without a huge set of questions. It will be a long summer.

  25. Robert,

As you are a MS evangelist, One reason why you might find 24 more interesting is all the technology that they use…especially MS technology in the recent season/s.

Even good ole Bill was ravelled up in it all. Now that MS is sponsoring it, I wonder how long till we see a guest appearance by Scoble?

Perhaps you might get that Scoble phone that Dave was talking about at one point? 😀

  27. Garrett: yikes, yet another show I’m supposed to watch? I can’t even watch enough Lost!

But, yeah, we’ll have some movie nights soon.

Weiyen: yeah, I’ve heard about that. I have two Scoblephones already (not to mention that Nokia sent me one of theirs).

It’s not every cancelled show that could spawn a major motion picture, though…

Housewives, Veronica Mars (looked kiddy cheesey until I watched it), Prison Break, Kingdom Hospital and 4400 my other favs. But I don’t watch TV, so much as “read” it. Tho 24’s template is getting mighty old.

The DVD culture, the long story arc, the death of sitcomization have all made for much much better TV. Speaking of TV, Alex Epstein’s new book JUST hit, yay…”Crafty TV Writing”. http://craftyscreenwriting.com/CraftyTV.html

  33. I have had a Sceptre Nagi III 37″ 1080p LCD monitor/TV for 6 months and I can assure you that a TRUE 1920 x 1080 “computer” display of say MCE 2005 and Vista DOES make a huge difference !!

Viewing computer applications like Premiere Pro 2.0, Photoshop, and Office 2007 are absolutely INCREDIBLELY detailed at 1920 x 1080 versus my 14.1 inch Acer Tablet PC.

Robert and everyone is correct that in the TV/DVD world that it really doesn’t matter … quite yet.

Check out the color chart from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080i

For the record, as the prices plummet on LCD panels – EVERYONE should keep there eyes open for great deals on true 1080p panels.

I have been waiting patiently for the new 46″ 1080p Sony LCD Bravias to be introduced – but the Sceptre is quite amazing for $1499 from Costco (there is a new 42″ for $1999) – the competition will drive prices even lower … and WE ALL WIN !!

PS My 1080p panel handles all resolutions “below” including 1080i and 720p quite nicely … the scaler does a remarkable job even displaying a crappy 320 x 240 pixel video stream from the web.

PPS Errr … I am a huge fan of CH9 videos … but Robert, don’t you think it’s time, with all of the latest WM 9/10/11 compression stuff to stream CH 9 video at something larger than 320 x 240 pixels ??? I mean 720 x 480 would be nice, don’t you think ??
