I’m STILL having 2 different problems:
1) I get an error when attempting to generate a Product Key for “Windows Vista Ultimate Beta 2” on MSDN
2) The Windows SDK is stated as unavailable when clicking on the link on the downloads page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/downloads/products/getthebeta/default.aspx).
I’ve submitted a report in MSDN, but can’t find any good way to submit an issue on the Windows Vista downloads page. What’s the proper procedure here? And how come this stuff isn’t QA’d before it’s rolled out? I sure hope somebody’s working on this, because it’s awfully embarrassing.

Correction on that last post, I was dealing with a cached page that apparently had a bad URL. The URL works now, but only points to a 280k setup.exe file. Why has MS chosen to prevent me from downloading the full SDK one time. Now, for every PC I want to install it on, I have to download somewhere around 1GB AGAIN.

so, you really expect to have MS staff the phone lines for supporting BETA software? You do understand support is not a money-making venture and that in most software companies support is paid for through the SALE of software, right? So, how do you suggest MS fund the support lines for supporting software they are not yet getting paid for? There’s a reason it’s called beta. I’m pretty certain there is likely newsgroup support for these betas? At least that’s been my experience in the past.

If you go straight to the Product Keys page from the main page, you’ll get an error. However, if you click the Obtain Product Key button, you will get the behavior you have described.
It should also be noted that I am able to obtain other product keys (even other Vista keys), but not the key for the Ultimate version.

And a personal thanks to whomever so badly sized the server farm for this. because why would you have more than ten people wanting to download this stuff.

Regarding comment #14, you can download Office 2007 Beta 2 without using their download manager – I was able to download the beta just fine without the download manager.
I installed it on Vista build 5381 and it worked perfectly. I had no problems whatsoever.

I didn’t have any problems with office 2007, but I did find something interesting in the CTP of Expression Web Designer. If you download the CTP, and need help you need to be a office 2007 beta user or else you are out of luck. Who dropped the ball on that one, Robert?

I have 5 different Microsoft passport accounts on 5 different machines-all using separate passwords and e-mail addresses. All have been in use for over a year.
In all 5 cases the download “manager” tells me that it cannot verify my e-mail address and to “contact customer support or try again”.
Regarding comment #16-how can you download the beta without using the “manager”?

The SmartSource client is not required for downloads. You can simply click on the product name to download directly. SmartSource is a backup for people with unreliable or slow Internet connections, as it allows for stop/resume of downloads and also enables download of multiple products at the same time. The email address you need to enter in SmartSource is the one you used when selecting the products you want to download.

It’s not an obvious solution, and quite honestly, if Microsoft is going to push “teh stoopud” that is their download manager, then they can either make it work right, or put a bullet in it.
I’m glad they’re adding servers, but it still shows completely inadequate capacity planning.

Only questions though on a mysterious (to me anyway) entry in the Outlook Options dialog. Its called “Mobile” at the bottom of the General tab – the “Notification” and “Mobile Options” buttons only bring up a teaser message saying “No account for mobile messaging is available. Setup an account using the “Outlook Account Manager”.
Interestingly there is nothing else on the topic in the product.
Oh, and Word is COOL! Ain’t new stuff great?

office 2007 outlook is unusable on windows xp here. Every email body is missing. That so sucks… More so becuase it was working fine with the previous beta. You guys have to do a lot better than this.

Is Windows Genuine Advantage nothing more than officially treating everyone to be guilty until proven innocent? Think about it, you go buy a new PC that had Windows pre-installed, as if you had a choice. You got your receipt in hand, and the first time and thereafter everytime you must prove you are innocent if you want to download from Microsoft software which you had already paid for in full. On top of this, Microsoft tells you in their EULA, which you have no rights to even negotiate, that their software is only license for you to use, but how can this be true since they are making you prove time over again each and every time to prove you already had paid for this software. Doesn’t this make you feel treated like a criminal to be subjected their policies, honestly?

I spent the better part of an hour this morning trying to download the Office beta with Firefox and it kept generating different server errors. I then used IE and it went through.
At some point in the future is Microsoft going to actually play fair with other browsers, or is this underhanded proprietary crap the official company policy.
I’m pretty turned off by all this.

I had problems installing the lastest Office beta on Vista. Then again I think it states that the Office beta isn’t listed as supporting Vista. I worked it out using compatibility mode and a custom install.

It’s like watching people trample each other for Cabbage Patch dolls at Christmas. This is a beta release for a product that will not retail till next year, it’s out there so we can test our software and report bugs. Why do people feel the need to download it instant it comes out. ‘Calm down dears its only a beta.’

In my opinion, the quality of the Beta have been going down. The first CTP that I accessed was actually ok. The next version (the one before Beta 2), my Wired Network card was not recognized, but at least my Wireless network card was ok. Now, neither one work, and I have a Standard Linksys 802.11b card and integrated Ethernet! All on a machine that is about 3 years old (but still a P4, 1 Gb RAM, new Video Card, etc..).
I’d love to work and play with it, but I have no means of activating it now….
Unless I want to buy a network card..

One last thing.. Is it just me? Or is the whole Windows – Space bar thing we were shown at PDC now not working? I couldn’t get it to work on the previous build either, but the one before that is just fine. You know ,the windows-Spacebar that rotates the windows 45 degrees out towards you and lets you move back and forth?

Robert – question for you. As a tech evangelist for MS, your job is to promote the use of technology in our daily lives, and, when possible, how Microsoft products make the world a better place.
Since your blog has become so prominent – I wonder if an entry like this begins to go against your job role – and hurt Microsoft?
As MS works to create, test and rollout these new products, when someone as prominent as you makes a post when you find a problem, the word spreads far and wide that the software is REALLY buggy. This begins to affect perception of quasi-geeks like me, and then gives a forum for people to complain, like many have in the comments. Some complaints are simply responding to your response, but others are just venting.
Shouldn’t issues like this not be shouted from a megaphone from the top of the tallest building? Don’t they hurt Microsoft on the product that NEEDS to be perceived as its savior?
Is their a way to deal with an issue like this in a smaller, quieter way?
Would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

You know, the only major problem I’ve had so far is that the product activation does not work. I had tried it on several of the Office applications but it simply times out and reports that it cannot detect a connection to the internet.
Strange. I’ll try again in a few days in case its sill just a server-load issue for activation.
One other issue was trying to post to my WordPress blog from Word didn’t work. This post simply didn’t publish. I’ll check the configuration again later today and try again.

I was able to install Office 2007 B2 and OneNote 2007 b2 but I am unable to activate the software even though IE 7 b2 and Firefox can access internet with no problems . Any tips on hwy Office 2007 b2 can’t find internet ? Any help is appreciated. I uninstalled Office 2007 beta 1 and Office 2003 to give this a go. Running on WIn XP with all latest patches on AMD 64 X2 with 2 gigs Ram.

I was able to install Office 2007 B2 and OneNote 2007 b2 but I am unable to activate the software even though IE 7 b2 and Firefox can access internet with no problems . Any tips on hwy Office 2007 b2 can’t find internet ? Any help is appreciated. I uninstalled Office 2007 beta 1 and Office 2003 to give this a go. I too have been unable to activate Office beta 2. It tells me that it can’t detect a connection to the Internet, or that the activation Web site is down. I can see an established HTTPS connection to the activation server, but the activation dialog just times out.

As of 2:56 pm Seattle time the Office 2007 online activation was working for me connected by Comcast cable. The new multiple notebooks approach in OneNote 2007 is very useful for me using my HP 4200 Tablet PC. I am curious how stable others are finding latest Vista build with Tablet PC’s. WOndering if drivers for trackpad etc will work ..

I believe the real reason why the return on investment for office computer productivity has been flat or increased little in the last ten years is because of Windows. I certainly feel Windows has contributed to the computer productivity paradox. It may even be the main cause for the paradox! Waiting for this time parasite to bootup, restart after frequent crashes, time spent on installation of programs, dealing with program conflicts, etc. is the biggest time waster in any business!

They might claim it’s because of all the new features they add each time, but that’s only half the story. The new features and the increased processing requirements are designed to fuel the process of perpetual upgrades. This is Microsoft’s way of rubbing Intel’s back so that Intel will give Microsoft preferential treatment when it comes out with new chip specs. It’s also Microsoft’s way of convincing consumers that their newer product versions are better because they are so much bigger. Their new features are often superfluous but users must still deal with the overhead required by the features even though most will never use the features.
Also contributing to Microsoft’s goal of putting everybody on a perpetual upgrade cycle is the backward incompatibility in Microsoft’s products. Once a small number of users adopt a new version of a Microsoft product all other users are pressured to upgrade lest they are unable to interact with files produced by the newer program.
It’s pretty obvious why the concept of perpetually upgrading is a bad idea for consumers. Perpetual upgrading encourages Microsoft to ship bug ridden products because they can always charge for the upgrade after the bugs are fixed.
Microsoft tends to kill off competition by drawing on resources supplied by its OS monopoly to completely out-spend its competitors, by using its customers’ dependence upon existing products to force new products upon them, or by buying its competitors outright.
System administrators who have had experience with other operating systems know that Windows is a nightmare to maintain. For a taste of what these people must suffer through read this insightful usenet posting by one frustrated sys admin. He describes some inexplicable problems that crop up in Windows and the vastly inadequate support that Microsoft provides when they arise. Especially interesting to note is the catch-22 that Microsoft puts its users in by refusing to give technical support when the user follows the instructions in Microsoft’s own “knowledge base”.

Well I get the Error Message that I have a previuos beta build of Office 2007 installed on my computer. But I don’t and never have had. I’ve even tried uninstalling everything else that smells like a beta but nothing seems to help.

Office 2007 Beta 2 not running on Vista 5308. Will definately be trying with Vista Beta 2.

I just loaded Office 2007 onto my XP install and it was great! My only issue now is that I can’t delete any emails in outlook. :}

I downloaded office 2007 on XP prof.at work [through a server] and Outlook works fine. I downloaded it at home – also on XP prof. and got no body in my e-mails. The header is there and sometimes an odd letter or character in the body – but nothing else. I love the rest of the office package and am loathe to give it up but I am having to access e-mails through my web server so will have to revert at least Outlook back to 2003.

In my naivity I thought I could install Beta 2 in parallel with XP Office. I rapidly exhausted my free tries and never could activite. Tried to use the XP versions and discovered they were gone. I uninstalled Beta 2 and reinstalled XP version. Lost all of my addresses and mail in Outlook. Later, Outlook stopped working. Tried to install XP Outlook again. Got 1402 error. Got the same error when I tried to install Publisher (on a separate disk). Am spending $35 in hopes Microsoft can get Publisher working again. I liked the Beta 2 features but will never again have anything to do with a Beta. Anybody have suggestions on the 1402 error?

COMCAST Customers – I was having an issue with activating MS Project Pro 2007 Beta 2 in addtition to a frustrating problem with Outlook 2007 Beta 2 not being able to find the internet when I attempt to follow a link (images in ‘safe’ emails also were not loading). I tracked the issue back to the Comcast Installation CD I had to install to initially get my connection going. Removeing that in the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs solved all 3 issues.

Hi – all of a sudden my Office XP small business Outlook program constantly hangs after one or two operations. Tried everything I know how. Even bought a registry fixer, but that’s not it. Deleted a bunch of items, no help. Am totally confused, and I need that program to go on living!

I had vista and it works for the first 3 weeks then it’s acting up making funny things happened to the point you cannot keep it on your system, Same thing with Microsoft Office outlook 2007 beta It works great until after 3 weeks when you got 200 messages or so
they all disappear blanked out I am certain this is a beta feature so that you would not keep the software indefinitely. I guess one should know better than to test beta you work for free and you get nothing back.
The idea is to make you feel that you need this extra product so you go out and purchase it when it’s on the shelf.
Calling MS oh lord I don’t even bother………….

I don’t. know what happened that the on screen comes a rectangular Box which, four L shape at corrners and connected with single lines. I want to eliminate this box to have the plain screen as usual.
How I could eliminate it I tried different commands but didn’t. work.
