Tools matter, at least with video

Yesterday Duncan uploaded a video I did with Jessica Arnold. She shows off Outlook 2007. Very cool. But what's interesting is the comments noted that the camera work seemed better. What changed? Certainly not my unsteady hand. But I finally broke down and got a $3,500 camcorder. Glad to see that the results are coming through the other side.

I'm over visiting Shel for a podcast on Waxxi. There are almost 1,000 people signed up, which is just freaky. It's like giving a speech at a conference only from Shel's kitchen table. (UPDATE: Jeremiah Owang blogged the podcast, which was interesting because it ran like talk radio — people could come in and ask their questions over phone and there was a chat room too, I really liked the format; Mish in Toronto also blogged it; so did Peter Dawson, damn these posts all went up fast).

He was just telling me about the world tour he's doing with Rick Segal. Says he and Rick Segal have already gotten invitations from all over the world.

Regarding emails from around the world, I'm way behind. Two weeks behind. Sorry if I haven't gotten back to you yet. Life interrupted. 🙂

  7. Hi Robert – It would be criminal for me not to point out Taglocity for Outlook – http://www.taglocity.com after seeing your Outlook 2007 video 😉

    I completely agree with you that people are going to need some new ideas on how to tool email – it’s getting out of control. That’s what I’m trying to do with Taglocity.

    Social tagging within emails, different ways to visualize bulk info and going beyond simple categories is a pretty interesting area to think about…

    I completely agree with you that people are going to need some new ideas on how to tool email – it’s getting out of control. That’s what I’m trying to do with Taglocity.

You might want to have the webmaster of the Channel 9 site (or whoever is responsible for the html/javascript that presents the media player) update the video player displays to Microsoft provided standards for avoiding the annoying “Click to activate” tooltip over activex components business (caused by changes to IE required by the EOLAS settlement).

    I expceted about 400 particpants ..not like 1K participants.. thats mind blowing sucess in anyones books .. Kudos to Tracy !!

  19. Robert, I’m glad the Waxxi broadcast went well. It sounds similar to Skypecasting – except that Skypecasts currently have nowhere near the functionality that it sounds like Waxxi has. I did my first Skypecast the other day, and I was appalled that there was no chat room set up – I had to do it manually, which detracted somewhat from my ability to run the show – and also no realy way for anyone participating to know who was talking, who was muted, etc.

    Exciting tools, though – we’ll see what the future holds for this format!

  20. Robert, I’m glad the Waxxi broadcast went well. It sounds similar to Skypecasting – except that Skypecasts currently have nowhere near the functionality that it sounds like Waxxi has.   32. About time you got ridda the shaky cam. Now all you need is to start doing some real editing and production, Avid or Vegas it, flag up Particle Illusion or get some ArtBeats or whatnot and start kicking in some lower two-thirds. And work on your audio.

    HDR-FX1 is a good basic DV/HD choice, but the lack of 24P and the lack of XLR audio inputs are MAJOR killers for me, plus the Carl Zeiss Vario only goes to 12x. One of those, “what on earth was Sony thinking” cameras. And it doesn’t work as well in low-light as compared to the Panasonic’s, personally I woulda gone Panasonic AG-DVX100 A/B (or AG-DVC60 for Shoulder mount’isms) or the AJ-HDC27H and Panavision Genesis (at the extreme). 😉

    This HD trend still doesn’t beat the film-look, imho. And for your use, HD is overkill. In the Prosumer market, I am all a DVX baby.

    You shoulda let me go camera shopping with yah. A major improvement, but Sony expensive and still lacking key BASIC features. I really don’t get that camera, the lack of features like 24P and XLR, is frankly, crazy.

    PS – You see the news on the AVCHD format? Basically, 1080i and 720p video to 8 cm DVDs.
