Wow is it friday already?

This week has rapidly passed between work, life and blogging.  Not quite sure how Robert does it all, but maybe he has a time turner I should've asked to to borrow!  Here is another attempt at a "mini scoblepaper" style post…

Welcome to Steve Berkowitz who just joined Microsoft from IAC/Ask to head the Online Buisness Group. I met Steve a long time ago and loved his energy and vibe.

Evolution of the netflix envelope – make sure to click the link at the bottom for a visual history.

The original RAZR got me to get a second phone in addition to my smart phone…wonder what kind of silling thing v2 will make me do. Speaking of cellphones Kevin sent mail pointing to a mobile technology podcast that looks neat…it is added to my list of things to check out.

Mark Harrision blogged a while back that 80-20 has built a free addition to sharepoint that adds record retention managment to sharepoint 2003.

The waybackmachine at archive.org is a treasure trove of information. You can find all sorts cool data about the web.  I did a long time ago and ironically the only place to get the results now is on the waybackmachine.  Today folks posted of visual histories of Google and Yahoo homepages and it would be great to see one for the main microsoft or msn pages.  Unfortunately it looks like we disable archiving on live.com.  I'll try to find out why.

If you are into grid computing and .Net you might want to check out Dan Ciruli's MSDN web cast on the 25th (my mom's birthday).

Found out that the Long Tail book has a cover now by reading a post on the marketing.fm blog

Don Dodge, Mark Cuban (yeah that mark) and others are talking about click fraudContinued on Mark's blog too.

  2. Thanks for the MobileTechRoundup podcast mention bubba. If you DON’T like the 30 minute show we’ll refund every penny you paid for it. 😉 Great job filling in for Robert as well. I’d love to see more guest blogging here for a fresh perspective. Not that we don’t want Robert’s perspective, because we do. Your stint just added a different dimension to the blog; for that I say: thanks!

  4. I’m sorry to put you in this position but you are my last chance.

Sometime last week my machine automatically dowloaded some updates from microsoft. Nothing new with that but soon after, I don’t know when, the oe failed to function properly. I contacted Microsoft through their web site with the following message.

When I try to open messages in outlook express I get a error that says “there was an error opening this message”. I’ve also seen one saying something about an address book error. And in fact when you click on the address book, it will say it can’t be found.

I cannot reply to emails or send emails using this machine.

When I restore the machine to Sauturday 15th April outlook express works for the day then when I start again the following day the problem returns.

I scanned the machine for viruses using Norton which came up with no viruses.

Is it possible that this has been caused by the security patch KB911567 which would have been automatically downloaded to my machine?

If so what do I do?

    Graham

    I received this reply,

    I replied as follows,
    Sir,

I am really upset and annoyed at the following message I received from one of your staff when I asked for major help on one of my machines.

He or she has made a major assumption that is untrue in order to avoid dealing with the problem.

But to answer the erroneous assumption. The drop down box on your web site asks where we live it doesn’t ask what nationality we are or where we purchsed the software.

The software in question was purchased in the UK in English. It is an update version of XPHome, to update the original windows 98.

From what I have read on the internet this may be significant to the problem I have encountered that I cannot open my mails. I could not answer your message on the other machine because I receive a window stating”There was an error opening this message”

For the last few days I have been using systems restore to use emails but today the machine will not allow access to systems restore either.

I have had to use another machine and access my email account via the internet in order to send this message I would therefore be very grateful if you could do something to help. Sending me off to a third party is not what I require right now.

I look forward to your reply.

This seems quite reasonable until you enter the UK site. I can find no way of contacting them by email. They assume that all their customers live in the UK and request telephone contact, I thought microsoft were a computer company?

Then when I do find the email address they sate that I have to pay a horrendous amount of money for help.

It appears at the moment that the problem on my machine may have beencaused by an update so why am I paying for the privelege of microsoft giving me the answer.

As you may have gathered from my rant I am not a techy and am having to use another machine with emails via the web.

I know this is not your problem but I am hoping that you may be able to send this to an appropriate person and get them just to mail me and tell me what to do.

This machine is predominantly used for emails only so it’s important to us.

Once agin I would be grateful for you help.

Sorry my first post to your blog is a rant but I have run out of idea.

  8. This is in reference to Graham’s rant and your quick response. It is funny that Customer Service never seems to be able to assist with everyday problems.

That goodness for BLOGGERS!! I have had several issues in the past, both with Spaces permissions/Live Contacts (http://spaces.msn.com/sirthinks/blog/cns!1F478AC93CF80280!3083.entry) and Internet Explorer/MSN Messenger(http://spaces.msn.com/sirthinks/Blog/cns!1pa4nulQZpexUwkJXTRY244A!1330.entry).

Both were eventually solved by, not customer service, but Microsoft employees (in one case not affiliated with the software in question) via their blogs and email.

I love this aspect of the blogosphere
