Manuel Clement’s basement

Manuel Clement is a famous technologist (he used to speak at the FlashForward conferences, now works at Microsoft) but that's not what this video is about. At home he's a musician and has a basement of cool stuff in his basement. It's interesting that many programmers are also musicians. Anyone else have a basement like Manuel's?

Manuel has more on his blog where you can download music and visit his community site named "Future Producers."

  1. I think it’s wonderful that he has a basement full of stuff in his basement. It would be another thing entirely if he had a basement full of stuff in his attic.

That said, I’ve got a small VO booth in mine.

  3. Half of my basement fits neatly into one server and a laptop. The other half is in the lounge (much to the annoyance of my other-half). 😉

Looks like Manuel and I have the same Event 20/20 monitors too…

Indeed Pete 🙂 those are the trusty 20/20bas – They work great. Loud too! The studio being soundproof (box-in-a-box model), it helps 🙂

Thanks Robert for posting this! I hope everyone will enjoy the music on my site too. I plan to post like crazy, including videos whenever I can.

    Stay tuned.

  7. 2 weeks ago I met a piano tuner by trade who swapped for programming in Python, Java and playing with AJAX out of a working olive farm 50 miles north of Granada in Andalucia, Spain.

We talked about the connection and he reminded me there is an apparent similarity in the precision required to create elegant music and elegant code. Isn’t that what inspired the Pandora folk?

  9. Second Lifeisms, Net surfing with TechTV has-beens, Major Headache Nelsonisms (gawd is ‘he fingernail on chalkboard’ annonying), 5th graders with Tablets, loading up on Energy drinks, Sea planes, and now some guy’s music equipment in a basement, umm nice, but just in Peoria, I know 20+ people with a similar setup.

Man, just chuck full of great content (note sarcasm). Hire a real producer. Least the editing is getting better, if jump zoom MTVish cutty. You editing this? Feels FCPish, ironically. Just wondering…a trip if I am right.

  11. Nope, I don’t edit it. In fact, I’ve had very little to do with it other than they are right next door to me and I like what they are doing a lot.

  13. I’ve always been a big fan of Manual. I’ve been a member (pretty inactive lately) for almost as long as he’s had future producers and I used to chat with him here and there back on the old flash forums, Were-here.

He’s the reason I picked up flash to begin with, when I saw that kick ass 3d menu he wrote ages ago.

He’s a great guy and his wife Christine is great too!

I’ve been into music for a very long time. my dad has a pretty blown out studio in his basement, and I’ve played guitar and piano off and on for 17 years or so.

  15. A Micromoog. How cool. I saw this post earlier today but was busy and didn’t click through to the photo until a friend emailed me the link. I love it.

Mano, is the Micromoog featured on your music? I need to check that out. I loved that pitch ribbon and mod wheel, you could do cool things with them compared to other controllers of the mid-70s.

The guy who emailed me about this, Kip Kniskern (one of the MVPs who does LiveSide.net), was instrumental in my purchase of a MicroMoog. He convinced me, at age 17 after getting fired from my job and losing my driver’s license, to take the proceeds from the sale of my car and buy a Micromoog. (It was the day before Halloween, 1975 — sorry to date us, Kip!)

  19. Coulter: like I said in a previous On10 post, these are not TechTV hosts. They’re from G4. It was for a few months called G4TechTV, but Tina and Laura were still from the G4 side.

  21. Doug (about the MicroMoog):

You know what… because of what you said, I decided to post an all-micromoog track on my site… Check the latest post at http://www.manuelclement.com – the name is “Go to your Moog”!

It’s a fun, funky-tune track. I actually made it the day I received the dusty 30 year old thing in the mail 🙂

  23. I got a passion for writing my own music (on the computer) through trying to write music for games I was coding. I enjoyed it so much that for a while I was writing music more than I was coding. It’s hard work writing music without any formal training and programming is so interesting that I eventually got sucked back firmly into the world of programming and I have found less and less time for music writing since then. I think programming and music are very similar, you are often using unique and creative thinking in an structured environment. No two musicians or programmers given the same brief would produce the same result.

  25. It’s still known as TechTV in common mainstream parlance, even in the G4 era. Reminds me of people who tried to force down the (never-taking) ‘cracker’ for ‘hacker’, it just all went ‘black or white hat’.

G4 is TechTV, TechTV is G4. Just a dropping of the geek, to focus on the games, G4 a much improved version, even in spite of SciFi’y rerun city. But that ‘radio show on TV’ bit they did prior was downright horrid. Adam and Morgan are tops tho, imho.

  27. Robert, sorry for the off topic comment, but I believe this is a better way to reach you than email…

I’ve just posted to my blog about Yahoo’s email whacking tactic: if you don’t log in for 4 months, your email is permanently wiped. http://web2dot5.blogspot.com/2006/04/web-25-yahoo-whacked-my-email.html

I was hoping you could clarify the Windows Live position… Does Ms create a contract with the user on registration that prevents adoption of a similar policy?
