Smelling the Skagit Valley flowers

What a great day smelling the tulips and daffodils. There's a ton of photos over on our Flickr feed. Flowers, or is that "flowrs," are always good photo subjects. It's am amazing sight to see field after field of flowers.

Was this a good thing to do for our marriage? Well look at the smile on Maryam's face. Says it all. Translation: if you're a geek working in the Pacific Northwest, take the women in your life next week and they'll be more likely to let you play on your computer the rest of the summer.

Remember to visit the headquarters of the Washington Bulb, Co. (well, actually, the garden next door, which they call the Roozengaarde garden. Bring your cell phone camera. Take pictures of the ones you like and you can order them online for delivery in the fall).

It's better than taking notes and forgetting what they looked like when you get home.

Anyway, if you visit you'll feel like you're inside Tulips.com. Which, pretty accurately, you are. Except if you visit the garden for real you can smell the flowers. Pretty hard to do that over a Web site.

If you want to visit Skagit valley (very famous) and see the flowers for yourself, remember that they only last a few weeks — usually March-May. It's best to watch the bloom update and see what's blooming before you head out. A couple of years ago we went during Easter break and all the flowers were already plowed under. It's a bummer to drive four hours and not see anything. (The fields are about two hours north of Seattle).

  1. Speaking of Skagit Valley reminds me of Deception Pass. I am no expert, since I was only stationed at Whidbey Island for 2.5 years, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND a hike in the Deception Pass area. It has breathtaking views and can make a wonderful day this time of the year.

    When my daughter was a week late, the doctor told my wife to walk more, so we went to Deception Pass and 9 hours after we returned home, we were off to deliver Brittney. Brittney is 12 now.

    You were there today? So were my wife and I. We drove up from Yakima and we stopped at Tulip Town instead of Washington Bulb since we saw WB the last time we were here. The Tulips are about a week or so from full bloom I thought, but the fields were still nice to see. We then drove up to Anacortes and are spending the night up here. Tomorrow on the way home, Pikes Market, and of course the mall and the Apple store.
    You’re right, it’s just nice to get away with the wife once in a while.

  5. More posts like this are a welcome diversion from all things nerdy. I took the family to see the tulips at the same place three years ago and they still talk about it. My 3 year old daughter keep running down the rows of red tulips. Thanks for the reminder to visit again this year.

  9. Today was probably a great day to go – next weekend is supposed to be the first big weekend when most of the fields are in full bloom, so there will probably be a crush of people angling for parking.
