I’m not signing up for the beta of this

MSNBC is reporting on brain cells being fused with computer chips.

The Singularity is Near.

But I'm not signing up for the beta of that! Although maybe that'd be a good excuse when I go all nutty on everyone.

  1. Hah! Although this is a funny post, you need to stop worrying about having a bad day – hell, I’ve never seen you gloat for several days after you have a good day! Let it go, and get back to doing what you do best – share Microsoft with us!

  3. The concept of “cyborg” is so prevalent in futuristic imagination that we won’t even bat an eye when creatures such as androids appear in sci-fi movies and novels. This piece of news about an attempt to fuse specks of brain into computer chips reminds us of how primitive we still are in the context of the vast technological possibilities in the future.

Incidentally, if you don’t already know, the famed sci-fi writer, Stanislaw (“Solaris”) Lem has just passed away. Here is a report on BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4851496.stm

  5. The scary part is that the liquefied brain matter that was pored on to the silicon actually reconnected neural pathways bridging the gap across multiple chipsets. Synaptic wanderings on top of silicon talk about a logic gate.

On another note imagine the viruses in this jacked in future… the “naked presidents” where you can’t get the naked images of Nixon and Hubert Humphrey and any number of old presidents out of your head. Then you really would go nuts 😉

  7. Philosophers of mind actually have been thinking over this scenario years ago as a thought experiment connected to the quesion if the resulting being will be conscious or not. Started with a Searle book. I’ve put some quotes for those that might be interested.

  9. Robert, a company exists which has coupled an active semiconductor device to the brain. This company is Cyberkinetics (http://www.cyberkineticsinc.com). Their BrainGate™ System is designed to provide a means for people with severe motor impairment a new method to communicate with a computer directly with their thoughts. As an investigational device, the BrainGate™ System is only offered through the clinical trial and is not commercially available. For more info, go to the site.
