Eric Rice goes virtual for New Years

I gotta get into Second Life. I hear Wells Fargo owns an entire island there to teach people about their bank.

I wonder if I charged a building or two to my corporate card would that get approved? Hmmm.

Anyway, just saw that Eric Rice is doing a live podcast (don’t we call that audio streaming?) and is gonna be having a party inside of Second Life on New Years’ Eve. I will have to try to join him. I hear Maryam is dragging me amongst friends’ houses in Silicon Valley. Hey, Maryam, only take me to the ones who have wifi!

  1. Robert, I’ve been using SecondLife since it was in beta in 2001. It’s a very interesting social environment, with its own politics and economy. It’s also interesting from a computer science perspective. I did some research while in college using SecondLife on “artificial intelligence in virtual worlds.” I’m also on MSFT campus, so if you want a guided tour of SL I’d be more than happy to give it (Plus I might be able to introduce you to their CEO). Contact me via email or on communicator (I’m paulwh (at) microsoft, btw).

  3. Yeah we’re pinging them about getting an island for Slackstreet as a fully functional R&D/Backlot/Studio/Commerce/Party center. My home (and night club) is on the 16,000 sq m. in Palulop. Someone please buy that 22,000 sq m of Myrtle land pleeeeease.

On a side note, you can podcast from your Audioblog.com account and have it show up as a music stream in SL. There’s a few more steps involved, but totally doable. Why you’d want to do it? Not sure. Because we can, I guess. 😉

  5. Second Life just seems too geeky. I was into Dark Age of Camelot for a while and those I’d meet kinda freaked me out. I’m sure most are really cool but just a bit weird for me.

  8. Robert, may I respectfully urge you to unwire and un-Internet yourself for your sake and Maryam’s on New Year’s Eve? Drink some bubbly, make new friends, kiss your wife… and stay away from keyboard’y thingies for a whole evening.

Trust me, that’s what I’ll be doing. I’ll be waltzing, eating, drinking (albeit Martinelli’s — I’m driving), swing dancing, schmoozing, and — if I’m lucky — kissing. And IMHO, that combination beats internet’ing any day of the week 🙂
