Outlook PM talks about upcoming RSS integration

Michael Affronti is a program manager on Microsoft’s Outlook team and is starting to write about the future of Outlook. Here he’s writing about RSS Aggregation into Outlook 12. I haven’t yet played with this feature. One reason? I’m happily stuck in the NewsGator family of products due to its synchronization features. See, if I read a feed on NewsGator on my desktop PC (which, ironically enough, gives you similar features to Outlook 12 in today’s Outlook) it marks it as read on the Web service and also on NewsGator on my Tablet PC and also on my new SmartPhone (and soon it’ll be synchro’ed with NetNewsWire on the Macintosh and FeedDemon and RSS Bandit on Windows) and also on the Media Center PC that’ll soon run my home office (which is how I’ll display stuff on my HDTV screen at home when I get that next year).

It’s going to be very hard for me to give up NewsGator because of this synchronization. Hey, Michael, is Outlook 12’s aggregator gonna hook up to NewsGator?

That said, don’t underestimate the effect of Outlook 12’s support of RSS here. It’ll bring millions of new businesspeople into the RSS world. This is HUGE. Outlook is probably the most used application in the world after Internet Explorer (and, on my desktop, is used more often than IE).

  1. The RSS bandit folks are apparently having a few issues getting the Newsgator API to actually do what it’s supposed to for articles, that being said I like newsgator too. Though I generally find myself using Blogbridge now instead, it syncs to it’s self nicely and can run on any box, and I don’t have to pay out anything at this point, it also breaks things up into nicer reading groups (IMO). News gator is anything but free if you want outlook integration etc.
I wouldn’t mind paying a bit for client, but object to monthly/annual fee’s. Sell me “somthing” and then get your dam hand out of my wallet. I know service focus is all the rage these days but frankly I just plain get tired of everybody trying to grab a piece of my wallet on a ongoing basis…

  3. Just as in real estate, successful data distribution is all about location, location, location. This Outlook feature will bring more information closer to my end users, and that is a wonderful thing.

I’m looking at the potential effect on workflow processes. Workflow notifications are constantly lost or ignored in overflowing email inboxes. RSS provides a better way to manage messages like workflow notifications. I’ve been working on this problem with my product, ZipLine (http://www.voiceoftech.com). Integration with Outlook will get me closer to the goal of a global inbox where message management is simple and all in one place.

  5. I cannot speak with any authority on this as a) I don’t work for Microsoft and b) I don’t have the Preview of Outlook 12 or OneNote 12. [Shameless Hint]

Looking at Michael’s post and the simple screenshot showing the ‘RSS Subscriptions’ folder, items in this are an ‘IPM.Post’ message class (A standard Outlook item). Whichever client you use to view your RSS be it Outlook, Outlook Web Access, Internet Explorer or Outlook Mobile Access you will have full synchronisation between all of these. As soon as an item is marked as ‘read’ and a refresh is performed on the client you will have what you want Robert, full access and synchronised across any client you may wish to use.

The backend Exchange Server handles all of this for you, Newsgator and Attensa will need to find some extra services to offer as they will be dropped very quickly.

  7. Please Please Please microsoft DO NOT hook up with the NewsGator online service.

Scoble, I’m glad it’s working fine for you but when I upgraded from 2.0.x to 2.5.x a month ago, not only did it screw up all of my folders that I renamed for my 150+ feeds, it also would lose my changes when I restarted outlook.

Now I’ve given up on the folder issue but am having a different problem. That is, certain feeds do not update for 1-2 weeks (even yours) and some got fixed when I emailed NewsGator about it. The ultimate fix: shut off online sync for the problematic feeds and what do you know – no more problems.

I am so looking forward to switch to Outlook 12 since the 2.5.x upgrade has been a complete bust for me.
