My Wikipedia policy

For the record, I have never, and will never, edit my own Wikipedia entry (Rogers Cadenhead talks about how Wikipedia’s founder Jimmy Wales edits his) . If you all think I’m a jerk I’ll leave that up there as part of the public record.

  1. What’s wrong with editin your own entry ?
Wikipedia entry is self sustaining via various audit methods .. Correct ??

Notning wrong in correcting one’s own wiki- as long its the truth be written !!

  7. wikipedia discourages people from making articles about themselves, because often people overestimate their importance, once an article about you exists though, I don’t see any reason not to correct things, especially factual errors.

  12. BTW Curry edited the page on Podcasting, not his own page, but that was still a mistake because a) he’s heavily involved in the topic and b) it was interpreted as trying to make himself look more important. He soon found out that he did not have the whole story, e.g. that he wasn’t the only one trying to automate the transfer of enclosures to the iPod at that time (mid 2004). He was already offending people by commercializing Podcasting through his company, so I’m not surprised people went off the rails, but I think he learned his lesson..!

  14. Well it depends if you want Wikipedia to be *complete* or only show what’s *popular*…

Many subjects are niches; you can’t necessarily wait for someone else to add something if it’s incorrect or missing…then you can leave and let people edit at will.

BTW I was the one who raised the NPOV dispute on the podcasting entry earlier this year, (not sure if that NPOV was after those famous edits or not, it was around that time I think – May?). I had no idea who’d edited it, or why, it just didn’t tally from what I’d read and seen only months earlier…this demonstrates the danger of doing history while you are in it!

There’s probably a good rule not to dispute an entry if it’s your own baby or about you, tho.

  16. Some complainer commercialized a ping server and a domain name. Commercializing and promoting podcasts, podcasting software, and a podcasting directory is a natural business in entertainment.

The “glaze of the public eye.” Well, the public’s eyes may be glazed over when listening to this grandstanding, but maybe they’re gazing when being critical.

Interesting how the boo birds come out against Berkman Fellow Wales and Wikipedia at about the time a “competitor” is being announced. Coincidence or treachery in the blogosphere?

I was deleted for not being famous enough.

This week I was featured in the Wall Street Journal, The LA Times and The Boston Phoneix. Am I famous enough for Wikipedia now?

Mike Miliard of The Phoenix writes: “If anyone can be called the father of video blogging, Steve Garfield is him. And not just because his vlog was one of the first. The fortysomething Jamaica Plain resident, a freelance photographer and video producer, is one of vlogging’s biggest proponents, a cornerstone in the burgeoning vlogging community. Just try doing a Google search on the subject without seeing his name or his wide-grinning mug pop up: “I want YOU to video blog!””

Do I need to ask him to write the entry, if writing it about yourself is considered vanity?

  20. I don’t see any harm in adding information to an entry about oneself, or a subject in which one is involved.

I start to feel a bit uncomfortable when information is removed, especially editing out the roles of other people in ways favorable to oneself.

  22. It is, in fact, a Wikipedia guideline to avoid writing about yourself on Wikipedia, including editing your own autobiography. What if your autobiography is wrong, though? Every Wikipedia page has a Talk page, and it’s certainly kosher for you to pop in over there and say, Hey, I notice this inaccuracy, here are some sources, thank you for your attention and have a nice day. At that point, if no one responds, if it were me, I’d make the edit and make a note in the Talk page that I had tried to do it in compliance with the guidelines but everyone else was too busy.

Maybe I should write an entry on Steve Garfield!

  24. Hi.

My question may sounds out of place but anyway. I have to ask you.

I just moved from blogger to wordpress for a lot of good reasons, but I would like to have my header just like it was in blogger. How did you add your header to this blog? I’ve tried to find out but it seemed to me until I saw your blog that all the wordpress blogs was using some templates between a short lists and that was it…

  26. Robert, there’s an option on each user’s page to send email to that user (if they’ve enabled that function). Alternately, you can contact them by leaving a message on their talk page, and they’ll see it next time they sign in.

BTW, I can’t see anything wrong with posting info on your article’s Talk Page and asking that it be carried over into the main article.
