I was just talking with Alex Bard, CEO of Goowy Media. Hey, it’s been a busy morning and he was showing me through the new Goowy Desktop. At first glance this looks like Konfabulator, but on second glance this rocks.
First you can use these gadgets in a Web page, or you can download their desktop client (hint: it uses Flash, so is pretty robust).
I checked out their Flickr, Del.icio.us, Technorati, and RSS gadgets. Really nice, clean. I’ll keep this up and see if it survives a week of use too.
Which of these kinds of desktop systems do you like the best? (We’re building something like this for Windows Live as well, but this is way ahead of where we are right now).

Scoble, you made my day. In all seriousness, Goowy is doing some great things with the Flash Platform and it’s been exciting to watch them develop.

The .net stuff is worthless to me. How am I going to use these products with a non-Windows OS since I refuse to use Windows?
Microsoft is laughable on the net. The other day I tried downloading Onecare from the Microsoft site. Internet Explorer is *required*. To download an installer?!?
Unbelievable the feds continue to allow this kind of behavior from a convicted monopolist.

There are at least 6 or 7 fairly well known web 2.0 sites built on .NET. Some of those are funded. NET is ganing real traction…

If MS would stop being so damned stupid about Mono, this would rapidly become FAR less of a problem for non-windows OS’s.
MS has a chance to show that their “We play nice with others” talk isn’t just the same line of BS they’ve been spouting for years. Put up or shut up. Help Mono.

I like the groooovy icons especially the lampshade iMac when as is the usual mantra, the “mac version is on its way.”
Such are the commercial pressures on start-ups.
Reminds me to get that blog entry about influencers and early adopters pushing new products written. Now, where is that Om Malik blog entry about the same?

I don’t like having to manage all these desktop widgets and gadgets myself nor do I like that these things are consuming resources like processing and memory when I am not using them. I am a fan of component software, especially web components, but I’d rather be able to build multiple views from these components as web pages which I control instead of introducing further complexity to the desktop. The average user is not going to understand that there are two classes of windows (application window vs. gadget window).

Goowy is nice, but doesn’t have a widget API. Most of the widget systems that have APIs make them overly complicated.

Not too sure what this has over Konfabulator or the OSX Dashboard; perhaps I’ve missed something? Will keep an eye on it to see how it evolves – thanks for the tip!

Goowy has promise, but currently sucks.
Two bugs I noticed. (1) Going back to the desktop view and none of the wigets loaded. (2) Moving the google widget and it getting stuck on my cursor so I couldn’t click on anything else.
But even worse is that I can’t find a way to give feedback. C’mon guys, your introductory emails (from no-reply@goowy.com) invite and encourage feedback but don’t give us a way to easily contact you.

I have to agree with Andrew Mitchell’s post above. I like the concept, but could be so much better. I looked at Live’s widgets and found them to be very appealing, but once again, it’s very Dashboardesque. I don’t need another e-mail address, news aggregator, etc.

I have been using/trying to use goowy for the last several months, as it is very user friendly it sucks. i have tried using it as my main email program only to find that the program only works part of the time. Some of my messages get sent others do not, which is very frustrating if you are not in constant contact with the email recipient. Have of my emails are not going through at all, i have tried on several different networks and it doesn’t seem to make any difference. The other problem is that they seem to have server issues constantly, so if you are planning on relying on this program, don’t bother. There are times the program won’t even let me respond to an email and i have to compose a new one, which is not the end of the world but at the same time NOT what i would be looking for in this program. I am suprised to find that there are not more people who have this problem, but they probably are wondering why their email contact hasnt’ responded to an email they sent last week, it’s cause it never got there. Either way, i have contacted the support team several times and they consistantly blame the ISP of the recipient, which is never the case. I will no longer be using this program, it’s a good thing it’s free.
