Bloglines feed managing capability sucks…

I can’t delete more than about 50 feeds at one time in Bloglines. I’ve complained about this before and they haven’t fixed it. Bloglines has no way for me to update my RSS feeds without deleting all my feeds and reimporting feeds from someplace else. That really sucks. There should be an “erase all” feature. Oh, yes, you can try the “Check All” and then “Remove” feature, but it doesn’t work. So I’m forced to delete all my feeds at about 30 per delete. Sigh.

NewsGator let me delete all 1378 feeds I had without burping. Oh, speaking of which, since stopping my Radio UserLand blog my NewsGator subscription level there has gone from 15,000 to 18,000. Whew! Maybe that’s the trick to getting more popular. Just stop publishing! Oh, well, there’ll be time for that when I’m dead. Heheh.

UPDATE: Mark Fletcher, founder of Bloglines, just left a comment here on this post and said this is an IE problem and that it works in Firefox. Thanks Mark for clarifying that!

  1. could be worse. try keeping an item as new, after a day try and find it with out trawling through all the fricking feed, grrrr.

again export and import is the only answer!

  7. I have this same problem with Bloglines, it really does suck but it’s still better than not using an online aggregator, hopefully they’ll fix this. I have noticed that they changed their export function some over the last few weeks; I used to be able to click ‘export’ and a dialog box would open, enabling me to save it as an .opml file, now, it just opens a new tab showing an .xml version which screws me up come Attention time (OPML) unless I just haven’t done it correctly yet lol.

  13. one more thing (even more important IMO), I seem to not get updates from several of my feeds thru these guys also (unless they al stopped publishing at the same time!), sometimes I get stuff weeks old, and I could swear that I read a feed earlier in the day that appears again later on when I’m at a different machine (but maybe this is because my cookies are deleted at browser close time, although you would think that Web2.0 would keep track of this for me when jumping from box to box…) sorry for dual post

If I want to go into the editor alone, it takes up to several minutes to start that thing, and deleting is hell.

As for crossing the checkmark on a post to keep / unkeep it – I would really like to use this feature for several reasons, but checking on does leave my browser unresponsive in that tab for up to 20 seconds, usually ‘just’ ten.

Firefox also complains, that the script is inflicting and running my system slow – never had that message before.

It would be time they stopped reloading everything and do more Ajax stuff to make handling of feeds workable.

“There is a problem with the database. Please try again later” — that’s what I got when I tried to import from my OPML to them. I couldn’t delete more than 30 or 40 feeds at a time either without the system hanging.

Time to remove their public feed link and put up a link to the OPML file instead.

  46. I had the same problem a couple of months ago when I imported blogs.msdn.com’s OPML file into my root folder of Bloglines, not knowing that there where over 1000 blogs (over 2000 now it seems). Eventually had to send in a support request to get all of the MDSN feeds removed.

As Scott says, there not been much in UI upgrade for Bloglines in a long time and maybe it time for me to start looking for another online blog “aggregator”, maybe one that can even aggregate multiple blogs _together_ into one feed. I’ve also found strangeness of read posts suddenly re-appearing as unread, and friends feeds just not been updated, which is mildly annoying to say the least.

The ‘check all’ issue is a known one but only happens in IE. We’re working on improved feed management, but I don’t have a date for when that will go live.

fyi, when changing blogs/feeds, if possible, you should set your old feed to permanently redirect to your new feed. That will cause Bloglines to automatically merge the two feeds. It’s also good for people reading your feed through other aggregators, as most other aggregators will do the same.

    Thanks,
    Mark

  83. In the past, bloglines has not “merged” feeds but displayed new content under the new url – which is absolutly unusable, especially when I say 301 redirect.

It should check the database, find the new feed address already in it and reassign subscribers to it – 301 redirects can only be set by someone with access to the server.

But the way it is, the old link stays in the system and is also offered to possible new subscribers.

In case the new feed address is not into the data base, it should just be created.

  93. The comments some earlier posters made here about the tardiness of new posts in Bloglines is an OLD ISSUE that needs to be addressed once and for all.

The last Bloglines said, which was over a couple months ago now (they have little to no public communication) was along the lines of “we have capacity issues, we’re aware of the problem, we’re in the process of moving, it should be better Real Soon Now.”

What’s the story? Are the several hour to day (to day+) delays in some feeds ever going to be fixed?
